Which Exhaust?

I'm new to Cummins and need some advice. I will be upgrading the exhaust but don't know what the stainless system of choice is. I've never had a diesel with a cat before and with ever tightening emission requirements I'm not sure it would be wise to lose it. I will be setting the truck up to tow, not race so how much of a performance difference will there be between a turbo back system and a cat back system? Thanks, Jeff

I would say, honestly forget about stainless and go with aluminized. It averages at least $100 cheaper for the same kit and will last longer than most people keep vehicles (5 years or so).

Go with turbo back, hands down. It is the best thing you can do other than gauges, get gauges (FUEL PRESSURE is the MOST important, then boost and EGT) and make sure they're mechanical.

Turbo back will lower EGTs much more than cat back and the turbo will spool quicker.

Many people have been happy with Rip Rook exhaust (he's a TDR member and may chime in). I'm sure there are kits out there with cats that flow better than the factory one so you can get the best of both worlds.

I'm with RJPotts, I would loose the cat, the easier your motor can breath the better performance and lower EGT's. I have a 5 inch exhaust turbo back, aluminized and love it.

You now have a 4in stainless system on your truck. Lots cheaper to replace the cat and stock muffler with a after market like the one sold by Diesel Performance Parts. They have the muffler and piping you need to replace what you have.

Deepends on how long you inteend to keep the truck etc. We have aluminized, 409 and 304 stainless systems that have 100% welded hangers and a muffler packed with a ceramic blanket and stainless steel wool. Install is real easy, no clamp on hangers to rust and fail, no drone to worry about and a great deep tone when you have your foot in it. Give us a call if you have any questions etc.

I'd go turbo back, you arent saving that much money with a cat back, its worth the extra $$ for the extra flow.



I've had about 5 or 6 different aluminized exhausts but in terms of stainless I've always liked how magnaflow systems sound.

A couple of questions about Rip's Shorty exhaust:

1) How load is it in the cab? To bystanders?

2) Is the outlet vulnerable to damage off road or better than the stock setup?
