Baldwin Filters

Both my 92 and the 99 Dodges used Baldwin filters without any problems and I'n happy with the results on our Ford Escort as well.



BTW - I also would consider the canister (for 89-96) as a spin-on / spin-off type filter and an element (for 97-present) as a drop in or cartridge filter.

Clean fuel is a must if you prefill the filter. I prefill. The way I do it is to use a CLEAN 2 inch nylon pipe nipple. I lightly hand tighten the pipe into the threaded center hole. Then I pour the clean diesel into the filter through the smaller edge holes. Doing that causes the fuel to pass through the filter media before it is used by the engine.
 
Matt, some folks even recommend that method for pre-filling the oil filter.

Seems a little picky to me, I like to assume oil from an unopened container is clean.
 
Oil Ape, if you're still looking for a place/brand of filter, I get all mine at Genos. I think the link is www.genosgarage.com. They know what to send you if you want Fleetguard. They will UPS'em right to your house. I'm not affiliated, just another satisfied customer. I agree with all the hoses and wires and with anit-lock brakes it looks really tough to get to. I stole a bowl from the kitchen and it sat nicely on the front diff. and the fuel drained into it. Using the primer button isn't difficult. I wormed my arm down there once from the top, but then figured out the broom handle trick. Now I can drink beer while priming. :D

This is definatly a do it yourselfer.
 
lift pump good for something....

filling that canister with clean fuel. . I clean the canister and screw it on with my fingers, so its loose. Put a tarp or catch pan under the front axle and bump the starter... let the lift pump do the only thing it can do right... Once I have fuel spilling out the top I open the drain a little, and bump the starter two or three times. . Then tighten once most of the air is drained out. Its a bit messy, but doesn't lead to air in the fuel system. and I don't have to bother with getting filtered diesel wormed in through the engine bay in the canister



First time I changed it I just screwed it on tight (and empty with the water drain open after it was mostly full). . took a lot of cranking before it finally started. .



Now its messy but starts right off w/ no stall. Lots of ways to do it. . At least I know the lift pump is pumping some fuel.
