Which fuel treatment is best?

I have read in some previous posts that Howes fuel treatment is good but I can not find it. Has anyone used Pyroil or Power Service? I believe Pyroil is made by Valvoline but am not sure who makes Power Service. I have not used any yet but am wanting to start. Thanks.

Looks like you have been a TDR member for long enough to have likely received Issue 30 of the TDR magazine. It has a rather well written article on several different diesel fuel additives, and also lists which of several properties each additive has. I personally use Red Line 85 Plus. I have also briefly used Lucas and PowerService on my old Ford 6. 9L diesel. However, I have never taken any of my injectors out to see what their tips looked like, so I honestly can't say from that experience how good any of these brands really are. I use a 1/2 bottle of Redline in every tank full or every other tank full so far. Have 8500 miles on Godzilla to date.

Aftermarket Additives:It would be convenient for the user if a finished diesel fuel could satisfy all his or her requirements without the use of supplemental additives. Although this is often the case, some users must use additives because the low temperature conditions in their region are more severe than those for which the fuel was designed, or because of other special circumstances. Other users feel that they need a higher quality diesel than regular diesel. And, finally, there are users who regard the cost of an additive as cheap insurance for their big investment in equipment.

A large number of aftermarket additive products are available to meet these real or perceived needs. Some are aggressively marketed with testimonials and bold performance claims that seem "too good to be true. " So, as with any purchase, it is wise to remember the advice, caveat emptor – let the buyer beware.

It may be helpful to regard additives as medicine for fuel. Like medicine, they should be prescribed by an expert who has made an effort to diagnose the problem. And they should be used in accordance with the recommendations of the engine manufacturer and the instructions of the additive supplier. Sometimes indiscriminant use of additives can do more harm than good because of unexpected interactions.

I've been using Power Service since the fall. I chose it because it had a good review on this site, and it was readily available to me when I needed it. (I wanted to make sure I had something in the tank when it got cold all of a sudden. ) I've had no problems with gelling, so I'm happy with it. Other than that, I really don't have anything to compare it to. Others swear by Howe's and Stanadine. I suppose any of these are good, but I haven't tried the others yet.

I have tried Lucas, Longer Diesel Life, Power Service, Howes, Stanadyne, and a few others that I cant recall. The Stanadyne was the best by far- smoothed out my mom's truck in 50 miles after sitting in 0-80 deg temps for 2 months. I have gone from 14 mpg to 16+ mpg in my 93 with it, so I am going to stick with it. I tried Howes from a flying J in Salina, and actually DROPPED mpg from 19 to 17 in the 92.

I have been using Power Service for roughly 3 years now. My brothers have used the same stuff up in Michigan on the farm for ?? years. I look at it this way if the FARMERS and truck drivers are using this stuff it must be for a VERY good reason. Neither one of these crowd of folks are in a habit of wasting money.
I too read the TDR vol #30 and liked what I saw. I am gulty of over maintenance to my truck. I have a little over 6000 on her and have changed my engine oil 3 times so far and at the next service will change the frt/rear dif fluid.

I have used Power Services for the last 22K with no problems. My mileage has not gone up at all with any treatment that I have tried.

I've tried them all in the last 10 years, in several different vehicles. I've had my 97 since it was new, have 120k on it now. I've given Howes more than a fair chance, and I think I actually loose MPG's when I use it. I gain a little with Standyne, & it starts better cold. Last month, I gutted the cat, and removed the radiator fan, and mileage is the same with or with out

I picked up my '96 last year. It had about 5 gallons of who knows what fuel in it. I filled up at Flying J and dumped a bottle of Redline in it. The enigne smoothed out, got quiet and there was a noticable difference in power.

Additives help with lubericity, water, gelling, cetane and critter control. But good qulaity fuel is important, too.

No matter what I add to the tank, nothing helps my VW digest Texacrap fuel.

I have been using PowerService since my first tank which I have about 27600 miles so far and have not had any problems with gelling or anythings else.

Being very new at this game I also use Power Service is everytank but one since it was new, 2800 miles old now. The tank I didn't use a additive was an experiment. The truck was noiser and lost power(had to use more throttle) plus my mileage suffered by 2 miles a gallon. I am Sold and really see no reason to switch products. It will be in every tank from now on.
