Questions for Boaters

Right now I have an older Magellan Meridian with the mapping software but it leaves much to be desired. I'm thinking about getting something fancier and keeping the Magellan in the boat.

I've been checking out the Tom Tom and the Magellan Roadmate 700. Any comments on what you have or wish you had. I know the GPS question comes up frequently and I did a search but I don't see many recent comments on the new setups.

Thanks,

Mike

i have a friend that has a Garmin, not sure which model though. it clips into a bracket on the dash and can be carried as a handheld. it has downloadable maps and an extremely accurate ETA, tells you when to turn and all kinds of cool stuff. great for those 18 hour interstate drives and it beeps at ya when your exits coming, those that have missed an exit know what i mean...

i personally, just got a Magellan handheld, but it's defintely not made for cars. They both seem to be high quality units to me.

I got TomTom5 that I run on a Dell Pocket PC. It works great! It can be a little tricky sometimes since it runs on a PC with the gremlins from Microsoft. No big issues, but it can freeze up sometimes, just like your home computer.

Check out the TT Go 500 or 700. This are stand alone units, and it's the same maps and software as TT5, but without the grief that Microsoft are causing. Yes I have used the GPS in both Europe and the US, and it's no problems so far. It recalculates the route very fast if you wander off the "path"

One other plus is that you can progam the locations for traffic cameras so the GPS warn you when you are getting close to one. I'm not sure how many states that have started with this yet, but here in Scandinavia they pop up as mushrooms. A very handy tool!

Check out my set-up in my readers rigs.

Thanks for the replies guys. The TT Go 700 is the one I was looking at. I'll have to read some more reviews and do some more checking.

SMolteberg, I've got an HPI savage with a Ram body as well. I can't remember if it's a 2nd or 3rd gen, it's back home right now and I'm on the road. I just run the stock body since it spends a lot of time skidding on the roof (I run er hard).

Keep em coming,

Mike

I just visited a friend that has a Garmin c340. Very nice. That will be my next one. I have a Garmin 176c now, it has a large screen but not so many features.

Hi Mike, TomTom are releasing a brand new unit these days called TomTom One. It will be smaller than the other Go's (same screen) updated hardware(faster processor).

I was warned as a general rule to avoid mobile units that uses a Harddrive as memory (like the Go 700) My friend that gave me this advice work as a service technichian, and he got the 500 just for that reason. He said a HD have moving parts and are real hightech, and they will fail rather sooner than later. A memorychip have no moving parts and will last much longer.

Yeah the Savage are pretty cool, but mine is down these days because of a bad engine. The Dodge body are a must :)

If you shoot me a PM Mike I might get you a test version of the TT5.
