My wife has the Garmin IQ3600 PDA with the built in GPS. It is defintely portable, and works pretty good. Take a look at their site:

I have a Palm Zire 71 with a GPS add-on. I'm using DeLorme Street Atlas for the maps, but don't like the display nearly as well as my wifes IQ3600.
Loading the maps in either unit takes a little practice, and you will need an expansion memory card for either of them, to load a large area, but it is doable. The only problem I see is that the battery life is not too great, so you would have to be able to recharge them in your vehicle, or have a aux battery pack add-on to extend the battery life.
