I have been pulling a 46' G-Neck for about 3 months now. The problem I seem to be having is I can't seem to keep the grease on the ball. Wheel bearing does not work, I have tried some of the Green Grease that Tractor Supply has and that doesn't stay on the ball either. I pulled the trailer last weekend about 100 miles round trip and the ball was dry again. Anybody tried anything that will stay put. I understand that I have to grease it, but should I have to do it every time? Someone mentioned hi-impact grease. I am concerned that its wearing things prematurely.

There can't be that much wear on the hitch/ball unless you are making lots of turns. There is probably some grease that remains on their surface. I haul hay and it's dusty, when I unhook there is always a little grease left on the ball. I put a dab on each time I hook up.

I really don't make alot of turns, but I would imagine it wouldn't take much just taking curves and other manuveuring getting out of my neighborhood and hitting the hi-way.

Find a stick of belt dressing, we've used that in the past but normally we just use a dab of grease... remember that the contact of a gooseneck is a fraction of a sq inch... . so no matter what you use, the pressure is going to push it aside..... all you can hope for is a slight film to help prevent wear... .

Keep 'er lubed even if you have to use KY jelly!!

Go to a truck (as in semis) parts supply store and buy some regular 5th wheel grease. Some comes in a grease gun tube, others in a small squeeze tube like toothpaste, and some is even spray-on. Otherwise, find some very heavy-bodied waterproof grease.

Any experienced trucker will tell you a dry 5th wheel is a VERY dangerous thing!!! A dry gooseneck cannot be much better.

Your rig will NOT handle right and you even risk jack knifing under the right conditions.

Towpower by Reese Hitch Ball Lube

I've used Mystik JT-6 (Red) High Temp bearing grease on the towing ball for years. After towing trips, the grease had always been very dry & caked-up on the ball & there was obvious metal to metal contact on the ball. It didn't take long for this to occur, either.

On one of my "back east trips" to Thunder in Muncie, I stopped at an RV dealership & picked up the Hitch Ball Lube. It's a white grease & seems to hold up much better than the bearing grease I had used, previously. It doesn't last forever but, quite a bit longer than the Mystik (which, is considered to be a good quality grease).

I know this is not a G-neck but, it's still a "ball". Metal to metal contact.

I think that the white grease that Buffalo is talking about is what Reese Hitch used , it was also called Lubri Plate. I have used a ton of it & it is a good grease. I use to buy the white grease from Reese until a man from Reese told me to buy the Lubri Plate. He said that it was cheaper & was the same grease.
