I've read many posts on the need for guages and I hope to get some before too long. My question is, what guages do I need for towing? I do not intend to race my truck or Bomb it much. I may go for an EZ someday but I don't plan on anything else. I figure I need a transmission temp and EGT but what else for my use? I also know the fuel guage is a popular must have.

The Sequel,

I would go with either a Boost or Fuel Pressure guage to compliment the Trans Temp and EGT guage. I personally have a Trans Temp, Boost and EGT combination and I'm satisfied with the information they provide me with.

Hope this helps, -Ken

I'm with Ken

I also have boost, pyro, and trans. temp. My trans temp gauge was really helpful on my big towing trip to CA last June. I knew when the trans was getting hotter than I like it, so I knew when to take a break. This happened going up a mountain behind slower vehicles when I couldn't pass - couldn't get going fast enough to get into 3rd gear lock-up. On the other hand, maybe ignorance is bliss in that regard.

The boost gauge is nice to let you know when you're hitting a grade or more wind resistance.

A fuel pressure gauge is next on the list, then a Mag-Hytec double deep pan.

I agree with Dave, " On the other hand, maybe ignorance is bliss in that regard. " I have a transmission temp gauge with the temp sender in the output line to the cooler. I see it go to 250 when I'm on steep mountaing roads and I can't go fast enough to get into 3rd gear lockup. I hate seeing that high of a temp.

I just added a double-deep pan and a second temp sender in the pan. Nothing over 200 so far with this setup. Plus it is a relief to know that the pan temp is 100 degrees less than the output from the TC.

:)

I think a fuel pressure guage is a must with the problems we have with the lift pump. 'Cause if that goes out and you don't notice it, it can damage the injection pump. If you have an auto, a transmission temp and egt would be next. Add a boost if you have room.

The sequel, for piece of mind,Id get a Boost/EGT,and a fuel pressure/trans temp combo guages. This covers the most important stuff. To me a FP guage is more important than a boost guage in the 24 valve,Most important is EGT,FP,trans temp, then boost. You'll know if you have a boost problem ,you;ll have an EGT problem too.

i chose to go with the isspro gauges. put egt, boost, and fuel pressure on the a-pillar. mounted the transmission temp gauge (different brand) under the dash where the ash tray would be if i smoked..... fewer $$, and quite nice... ... .

IMO--went with dual egt in dash where change hole used to be. A-pillar is temp. with four position switch (Trans/eng oil/front and rear end), vacuum (probably easiest to forget), and fuel pressure (diffenently most needed for 24V). :)
