I have a customer that I sold me Dad's 93 250 to. He is 70 yrs. old and mechanicly challenged. I now have him out picking up 5th wheels and travel trailers for my dealership. The 93 250 is auto, 3:54s and box stock. I did install a boost, pyro and trannie gauge set. Here is my question: What "mild" upgrade can I do to give him a bit more power? I do not want him to melt this motor. TST says they have a Turbo Housing Kit for $169 that is good for 20-30 HP. In reading the threads everyone leans to injectors. I love to hear about all the feats that folks do with their trucks. But guys, when you have a 10-12K 5th wheel behind you in 110 degee temps for 1,000 miles at a stretch, it calls for a little differant tweaking. I need him to have 190-200 HP and not burn it up. Can that be done??

Hi Barry.

I still think the injectors and accurate timing adjustment are the way to go and here's why:

1) You can easily adjust the different setings on the VE pump to taylor power to what you want (all the way down to stock levels) with the PW/JRE/BD injectors.

2)The injectors are relatively cheap.

3) The bigger injectors make the pump's job easier.

4) It is an easy thing to do.

He could just turn the pump up some with the stock injectors, which is the easiest and cheapest thing to do, but that is generally considered not good for the pump. However, if he does it just a little it should be OK.

A K&N filter provides a noticeable bettering of performance and the 16 cm2 housing is definitely worth the price for better acceleration.

EGT will not be a problem at low elevations unless the fuel is turned up quite a bit.
All he has to do is watch the gauge.

I've found hot weather affects the coolant temp way more than EGT.

Thanx for the reply! I have installed a K&N, opened up the exhaust a little and tweaked the pump just a tad. If you stand on it the EGT is only around 800 Post Turbo. So if I do the turbo kit and the injectors and a little fine tuning would hoping for the 200 HP mark be optimistic? AND how close would he have to monitor the pyrometer?

Hi again Barry.

200 hp is easily possible. You should be about there now depending on how much you adjusted the pump.

You said EGT was 800F post turbo; he has another 100F or 150F left and the turbine housing would definitely help that.

At altitude (3000 feet and higher in my experience) and running hard he would want to really watch the EGT.

I'm not sure who else makes a pump kit for the early rotary pump 12v's, but I know Diesel Dynamics does. They say 40hp/80ft-lbs to the wheels with their $150 kit. It's worth a look-see.

BD sells exchange pumps, injectors, etc. for the first gen truck. You can get one with the fuel turned up and governor reset to 3000 rpm if you wish.
