In this photo, which of these bolts is the overpressure relief valve and which is the oil pressure access port as discussed on page 9-338 of the service manual?

Both of those ports on top of the filter housing are bleeding off of the same oil passage.

That is oil returning up from the filter running passed both of those pipe plugs and the turbo's oil supply line.

The majority of oil volume returns to the engines/blocks lubricating system.

Well, that explains why they look identical! The oil pressure regulator must be the larger nut toward the front of the engine?

I assume that either of the pictured bolt locations would work for a bypass oil filter input line. Does the oil system have a port for the bypass output to drain to the pan? Or do I need to drill and tap the pan? I would rather find an existing port, to keep the drill shavings out of the system.

Yes, eventually I intend to use one of the ports to supply a bypass filter. For the return line, someone (I think Amsoil) makes a fitting that you thread into the oil filler cap! That's the way I plan to do it. The other way would be to drill and tap your oil pan... or valve cover.

I plan my setup exactly like Amsoilman, except that I'll run a tee-fitting (or possibly a cross fitting) at the oil port atop the filter so I can run the bypass filter, a pressure gauge, and a temperature gauge all off the same port.

I wonder if anyone has used the second bung hole on the engine block towards the front of the engine?

You could remove the plug and install an inlet pipe (like people do with twin turbo setups).

Hopefully someone else who installed an aftermarket oil pressure gauge will read this...

According to the service manual, the oil pressure regulator keeps pressure below 75 psi. However, on my Isspro aftermarket gauge, which is plumbed into one of the pressure ports atop the oil filter mount, is easily pegged at 80 psi (maximum on the gauge) during cold weather at RPM above 1500.

For those who did install a gauge, what are your observations?

Wayne, which size (BE-90, 100, 110?) of filter did you use? I had lots of fun :( getting a BE-100 attached there. I don't know if it will come out easy in 15k miles... Thanks, Dan

I had a mechanical gauge on my '01 and it went to about 95-100 PSI when cold which is probably normal. This was reading off an oil gallery about mid-block on the driver's side.
