I just got my NV4500 filter kit from Geno's garage and wanted to ask which gear oil should I use for my transmission? I think I am supposed to use a 75w-90, but I am unsure of which brand to get.

Also, anyone running the filter kit I purchased? If so, what do ya think of it and how it performs? Nice that it supposedly makes the transmission hold about another quart of lube. :D

the side of the transmission has a plate on the pto cover that tells you what you need. castrol syntorc or something to that effect. there is a lot of talk of which lube to use in these things, but that is what it says to use. standard transmission is reasonable with their asking price on the stuff. i hope that helps ya out a bit. if not look around a little bit. i know you will find more than you need to know.

Keep in mind that it's not "Castrol Syncromesh" that you will find at the local parts store it is Castrol Syntorq that is only available from chrysler or gm and a few places by mail like Standard Transmission. Do a search on NV4500 lube or oil some have used products like redline and royal purple with good success. The Syntorq is about $20 a quart from a Dodge Dealer!

I've used Amsoil for 5 years, 75W-90 Series 2000 synthetic , and have yet to understand why some folks still insist on that Castrol. I've had no trouble and don't think you would either.

Do I have to order that stuff from Amsoil? And how much is it compared to the expensive Castrol?

Any opinions on the Royal Purple 75w-90 and where to get it?

I use Royal Purple MaxGear 75W90, and so does everyone else I know with a 5 spd. About $8 a quart, a ton of miles between the trucks, lots of towing, lots of abuse, never any problems.

I hate Amsoil's marketing campaign. I won't use it simply because of it. It's the "the only oil worth even buying is Amsoil so it shouldn't matter what it costs" attitude that really chaps my ass. If the product is so good the results will speak for themselves and talking **** about other oils won't be needed.

No offense to people who sell it, you are just doing your job and trying to sell product. That's what this country is all about:)

Dan:

I have heard good thing about Redline. Some folks really like it.

And Joe... ... . Old ways are hard to change. God, if I ever get old like that, naugh, I won't even think about it.

And Matthew, I don't see what you do. I think all oils are good. I just think I have had such good success with Amsoil, I would be a nut to let something like that stop me from using it. I think you have just run into some bad personalities.

Good luck all. .

Sorry for the double name... ... old age. :D

Chevron DELO Trans is another choice. Avoid any trans oil that has sulphur or phosphate additives in it, as they will trash the yellow metal synchros in no time.

err..... WRONG! Not all gear oils are made the same and this statement is just flat incorrect - a generalization. !

(by the way, the Delo Trans Fluid ESI technically is no better than other non factory fluids in that this is not rated API GL4 but is only a Eaton Road Ranger fluid and non-synthetic at that. The Eaton type fluids have no more load carrying ability than a straight motor oil by the way..... ) Here is a link to the product data sheet and it does not mention API GL-4 applications at all.

I've used RP MaxGear 75W90 GL4-GL5 rated oil for 8+years and 130K thousand miles with one oil change.

My NV4500 shifts as smooth as any I have seen or driven and better than the original Castrol Syntorq LT fluid as a factory fill.

Please don't make 'general' statements about things like this.

Yes, it is true that if you buy a 'budget' branded product such as those offered by the mass marketers (err, I mean major oil companies) you might run across some brands that would be detrimental to the synchronizers if the fluids were run past their useful life.

But many vehicle OEM's continue to recommend 'gear oils' in transmissions that use 'yellow metal synchronizers' and they do NOT have problems unless the owners never change the fluid.

I have drained many a Mazda RX3 or 7 transmission containing a EP gear oil and have yet to find any damage to the bronze synchronizers in the 4 and 5 speed trannys.

Many specialty manufacturer's of oils (such as Royal Purple, Redline, Amsoil, Shaeffer's, Torco, NEO, Motul, etc) make great gear oils that are a far better purchase and out perform the OE type fluid.

Having said that, if you are of the personality to fear the 'factory warranty issue' by using a non factory part (fluid in this case), by all means, use only the factory fluid and have only the dealer do the installation. Because if you don't, the dealer will claim you under filled, over filled, after filled (that's where you operate without oil and then remember to put it inOo. ), or lied about using the factory fluid.

Come on everyone - this is a very independent group of owner's (look at the upgrade signature lists) who tend NOT to follow the(lemmings) over the cliff.

Sorry - but I got on a roll on this with the outrageous generalization about yellow metal problems.

Cheers to all and have a great weekend!;)

75/90 Amsoil with a set of Fast Coolers with a trans temp gauge probe. . I have been running this stuff for 80k in the gear box. I just decided to do the Fast Coolers and temp gauge to see how warm it gets when pulling out 5th wheel. In the bottom of the gear box was clean. . no sludge. .

What do you guys think about the Mobil 1 synthetic or dino gear oil? What about the Valvoline? Just asking cuz I am having a tough time finding any Redline or Castrol locally and my local Kragen auto has the Mobil 1 synthetic for $7 a quart and $4 a quart for the dino. Didn't get a price on the Valvoline. I think Mobil 1 is great oil, but has anyone used this stuff in thier NV4500 and had good results?
