Which oil filter Should I use?

It was Fleetgard until I went to all AMSOIL. Now I use the Donaldson. I only drive about 7-8K a year and I change the oil once a year. No problems...

WHO CARES The truth is way to many people on this and many other sites spend way to much energy worrying about the damm oil filter. Truth be toll, there are only a hand full of filter manufacturers in the country, and they simply supply many, many different BRAND NAMES with the same filter, just a different color, name or some other identifying mark. All filters made have to follow the specifications laid down by the engine manufacturer (in our case Cummins), these specifications deal with the physical dimensions and characteristics of the filter. Like filter Thread size and Pitch, relief pressure setting and so on. The filter media is of-coarse different on some brands, but it still has to meet the specific criteria the engine manufacturer spelled out. I would much rather see someone stop obsessing over one brand of filter verses another brand while all the time running extended oil drain intervals and not replacing the filter, and buy a cheaper but still spec filter and change it on a more timely bassis. With the advent of much better oils and synthetic oils, the oil it self is not the problem. The problem is keeping that oil clean.

Agreed.



And like anything else, you can have one manufacturer making several different GRADES of filters, from something cheap that falls apart (Fram) to something fairly high dollar (Fleetguard). It depends on what the middleman specs and is willing to pay for... dodge is only willing to pay for a low grade fleetguard, while a pennzoil filter is a low grade Fram... the consumer is then left to decide which one is "affordable" and best suited to their needs...



The "who cares" mentality is far too common in our modern "disposable" society.

I just paid 10. 70 this morning at National Dodge in Jacksonville NC for a Mopar filter for my truck. Not a bad deal if you ask me. If you have a dealer around, check them out, sometimes they are not always out to get you. Scotty
