Im new to the land of dodge, however Ive been

a diesel freak for a while.

All this stuff about oil and filters is confusing.

Ive got a 93 D250 LE automatic, 96000 miles. Its getting time to change the oil and filter.

Wal-mart here in CT has rotella-t, chevron delo 400 and mobil delvac 1300 all 15-40.

Will the truck start at 0 degrees F with these oils?

Synthetics are a bit pricey but what about extended oil changes?

Where do I get the filter required?

Thats enough to start with.

TIA

Welcome, Spencer....

Don't know anything about !st generation, or 2nd, come to think of it:confused:

All of those oils are considered good for our trucks, and I doubt there's any problem with zero temps.

I'd call your closest Cummins dealer and get the part number for the most updated Fleetguard oil filter and buy from them, www.genosgarage.com or call around to a big rig service/repair shop. Don't buy from a Dodge dealer unless you enjoy wasting money.

Also get the same info on your fuel filter.

Good luck.....

I use Cummins-Valvoline Premium Blue 2000. Synthetic-Petrolium blend. Will start at minus 20 deg. (NO engine water heat) After setting for two days.

All of the oils you mentioned are compatable, I use the Delo 400, because they sell it at the Costco nearby. As far as 0 degree start-up, no problem with the block heater plugged in. Not plugged in I could not answer that, I'm sure one of our members could answer that.

I've used Shell Rotella 15w40 in all the diesels I've operated since I was 10, not an engine failure since on anything with less than 15,000 hours(thats the equivelant of about 700K miles). The two that did fail were the fault of the operator. The ones that I had the chance to O/haul where clean as a whistle. No starting problems yet, even when I got the Cummins stuck in a corn field during hunting season last year and the temp dropped to -10* F overnight. Started right up the next morning.

Guess I've rambled enough.

Oil and Filters

Up here in the cold canadian winters we use 0w40 in everything diesel. Flows even down to -40. Just cycle heating element twice in really cold weather when not plugged in. As for filters use nothing but fleetguard filters. In a recent Cummins power booster newsletter there was a filter comparison with fleetguard on top. They had way more filtering material more and larger holes for adequate oil flow as well as quality construction. The filters compared were napa gold, k&n, Fram, as well as mopar fleetguard conv and stratopore. They didn't have purolator or baldwin filters so I don't know what they are like. You can also use CASE/IH filters as they are made by fleetguard.

I use Delvac 1300 for 3 years. Cold starts and all. I'm not into extended oil changes. Cheap insurance. Get a quality filter and you'll be fine. Stats from companies can be manipulated to show anything. I wouldn't use 0w40 unless you are WAY up North.

I agree with not extended oil changes. I change oil every 3000 mi. s on everything with Delo 400 and Napa gold filters. No problems. I might look into Fleetguard filters though if they do indeed flow more oil with better filtration. Wher can I find that test? Thanks Tim
