I posted the question on the 12 valve forums, then had a member cross over to put his two cents in from the 24 valve forum, so I thought I would present it here as well. My 03 is almost sickly quiet, my 91 has a smooth, yet firm knock when it idles and just off idle, sweet music. I have heard some second generation trucks that really bang at idle or just off idle. You guys have a theory? 12 valve or 24 valve have the distinction of the loudest knock? I know the 24 valve sounds a lot busier! Glen

I am with WMatt my 2002 24V HO is louder than my buddy's 91 12V Ram 250 or his 2000 24V Ram 3500, all 3 trucks have straight pipes so i would think it should be a pretty fair comparison.

THIS 01 is the quietest i've had yet. ive had an 95, 97, 01#1, and 01#2 and a 00 powerstroke. oddly enough this truck has the most mods of them all.

My 24v HO is by far louder than my friend's 96 12v, the real difference is with the hood up, we can speak to each other with his hood up right in front of the truck, but with my hood up, sign language is the only option.

My '01 24V. H. O. 6 Spd. is MUCH louder than my old '96 was. I couldnt help but notice it in the mountains at 10,000' the other day pulling a Cat D2 5U dozer on a 32' gooseneck.

In my opinion, basically any 24V would be the loudest of the 3 generations. However, it seems when a person gets to tuning them to producing serious horsepower, they seem to quiet down much like a 12V.

My local friend has a 97 12 valve and he always gives me grief about how much engine noise my rig has. It may be louder but it is also faster. :) :)

P. S. I am not saying all 12v are slow, just this scenario.

I'm thinking that this is mostly a function of what injection pump you have on your particular engine. Most of the noise you hear at idle is the injection pump. Stick your head in the engine compartment at diferent places while it's running (not in the fan though) and listen to how different parts make noise.

Depends on the timing. Advanced timing is loud (the ECM on a cold 24 valve will advance the timing until water temps comes up) HO are a bit louder still with their higher CR...
