i changed fluid in rear of my truck yesterday and i used the black permatex, is that the right gasket maker? no leaks as of now but i want to make sure.

yea i think black is one of the better ones out there. . at least claims to have oil resistance.



if yer seal is set, take it out on the highway and heat up the diff. if no leaks after that, then yer good. .

ok thanks, i didn't realize that it was a kid at autozone that told me to use it. i guess he did know what he was talking about. i filled the diff yesterday and drove around even with the trailer on in 85 degree heat and as of this morning no leaks that i can see. i parked her on the street to make sure. i was surprised to see so little wear on the rear with 113,000 miles. there was only a small amount real fine metal pieces. today i go and tackle the fluid change on the transmission. never done it before but i won't be able to say that tonight. have a good day guys!!

Hey Fanz, when fluid change time comes again, splurge and pick-up from Genos Garage the Mag-Hytec diff. cover. It has an O-ring built in to it, (no permatex needed ) , has a drain plug (cover stays on ), magnetic dip stick (metallic sediment is drawn to it- oil stays clean ), gives rear a larger capacity (more fluid-better for gears ) & easy to install allen head hardware for easy installation :-laf . It may seem hard to part with $200+ at first, but once you have the cover in your hands, you will know it was $$$ well spent. BUY ONE! It looks cool! Mike H.

your right it does look cool,but i only tow about 5,000 pounds and i have mobil 1 75w140 in the rear so i am sure the rear will stay plenty cool as is. i do think their deep sump transmission pan is going to be a purchase in the future though.

Black is the Ultra high temp, All the other permatex silicone is junk. Always get the best,stick with high temp black!
