Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Which pusher psi to use

I just had a new lift pump installed today under warrantee, (57K miles) and I want to pick up a pusher this week and install it while the lift pump is still new. My question is, which Pump is more suited for my needs? Carter P4601HP with 15psi @100gpm or the Carter P4600HP with 8 psi and I believe 70gpm. My new lift pump gives me 15 psi now so I would imagine the P4601HP would be the logical choice. However, I read here that a lot of the guys use the lower 8 psi P4600HP. I'm at a loss as to why a lower psi pusher. I will be running it off a relay. Thanks for any help resolving this issue for me.

The P4600HP is the way to go. I put that one on and upgraded to bigger fuel lines and I get 22 psi at idle and at the least 14. 5 wide open. Has been woking great so far.

By the way the P4600HP flows the same volume (100 gpm) not 70..... that's why it works.

Guys, you don't want high PSI from your pusher-- you just want the volume. Just a couple PSI is all it takes to keep the stocker from having to "suck" fuel.



I'd say the highest FP you want to the VP is 20psi at any time. More is not good.

wouldn't more lead to hard starting conditions? Or do these pumps kick off with the stock LP after pressurizing the VP44.

if you set your pump up with a relay fed off the positive feed of the lift pump, then it only runs when the lift pump runs. i have mine switched in the cab via a relay. these engines don't like starting at high fuel pressure. the 4600 carter is the pump of choice for most.

I need to add a pusher too. But am alittle lost on the eletrical hook up and relay. Can I just tap off the LP wire only or do I need a relay (relays are over my head) Keep it simple.

You definately need to use a relay. The stock wiring won't drive 2 pumps for sure. Relays really aren't hard, they are just a switch that is thrown by 12 volt. Here's a thread on relays and how to wire them up - https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=53625

If I was to go with a single pump at the tank, what pressure and gpm is needed? I've had the Carter 4600hp for 2 years now, but would like to simplify things with one pump.

Thanks for all your help guys, I picked up the 4600 today and will install it hopfully by the weekend. I still have to figure out which prefilter I should go with, and I've seen some mention of a check valve on this forum, however I'm not yet clear as to it's function. I bought my truck 4 months ago and have been lurking here for 3 months before I joined. I never would have known about the little quirks and shortcommings of this truck if it had not been for the vast storehouse of knowledge that is offered here at TDR. I'd recommend you revisit the "pumps, lines, what not" thread" via search. That will answer all your questions and then some.
