Cooker and Oil Man thank you for your help. Now it makes since to me. I live in the NW and we don't see those kinds of temeratures so maybe for what I need, the LE 607 would be the one to use.

Ok am I to assume that the Dana 80 takes 5 quarts of oil?

Mike

John in Enum - you are correct. I used the Redline 80/140 WITHOUT NS. I called Redline and asked which oil to use. There was no hesitation or discussion from their engineer.

John, was that comment aimed at me? Yes,I decided it to go synth. I was going to go Amsoil 5w30 in the engine a while ago,but Steve (jmbrowning) picked me up a full case of Delo... so now I've got 4 gallons of delo left to use up,then I'll go to the Amsoil 5w30. Okay,okay... I'll admit I like the stuff. The truck actually rolls noticeably smoother going down the road, and while this maybe coincidental,my mileage went up 1 mpg (600mi road test).

The best place to purchase it is Mag-Hytec,(818) 786-8325.

Be forwarned it is a bit pricey, that's why I asked the question about it's longevity above. But I've finally decided to use it regardless of price. I'm convinced it will provide the best protection in my "pigs".

Oilman, you said you would not compare the 9920 to Amsoil. Why not? I am trying to get the specs for the stuff you tout and you may be the only source for the information. Specs such as the 4 Ball wear test, pour point, etc. I tried the website, but can not find the information there. I don't think a side by side comparison is a bad thing, so how about posting some numbers or point me to a place that has them. Thanks.

John Berger,
I would love to give you the information that you have asked for, however "I" can only give you the specs for the 9920 from LE and not specs for another company or any tests that have been done for one of our customers. I believe that you are asking for a comparison of LE and another oil company between gear oils. You might want to contact Mag-Hytec at 1-818-786-8325 and ask them if they would like to share the testing that has been done for them at their request. Sorry, my hands have been tied and I must go by the rules. The tests that you might want to ask for are 1. SRV EP max load w/o Seizure in Newtons, 2. 4-ball load wear index and 3. Weld point kg, and 4-ball wear test wear scar,mm results. Since these tests were done for Mag-Hytec they must be the ones to share that info with you.

claymike,

yes the spec is 5. 05 quarts for the Dana 80 on a 4x4. I would assume if you throw in 5 and not the extra 1/20 of a quart (less than one ounce), that would be just fine.

I see your in Portland. Just curious what kind of winter tips you do see? And don't forget if you travel to the north in the winter where is may get quite cold, you may want to consider the 9920. If not, no worries.

Oilman,

I didn't know that. I have the Amsoil specs, I wanted to see the LE specs. If you have the LE specs, that's all I'm looking for. E-mail them to me, if you can or post them here, whatever suits you. Thanks.

Fellow Rammers:

I've been researching for the past two weeks since I ordered and received my Mag-Hytec diff cover. The instruction that came with it recommend the LE607 for heavy duty use and the LE 9920 for colder climates. I read this very thread last night and called Roy at Mag Hytec today. He gave me a very informative and detailed information about LE. He recommended the LE607 for my heavy towing application. The LE607 is on its way.

I guess everyone is a winner no matter what they choose. My next project is engine oil.

Thanks all for the inputs. That's what makes this a great place.

Happy Ramming, Wiredawg

I hate to post this - but am anyway. A week ago I was searching the net for oil information. I stumbled upon a site - here's the type of reporting I despise - but am doing it anyway. The site was run buy a company in the business of doing oil testing. Their report on Amsoil 2000 was that it did well in the 4 ball test because Amsoil loaded their oils with additives specific to making them look good in that particular test. Then shortly thereafter the additive depleated. And Amsoil wa no better or worse tham most other synthetics. The 4 ball test wa just advertizing hype. JMHO

I filled my Mag-Hytec with the LE-607 and found that I only needed one bottle of friction modifier. I did many figure-eights and received many stares but no binding of the LSD with the single bottle.

I was running Redlines 85-140 and would see 200 degrees in my dana 70 rear with one of Roys covers. I then switched to LE 607 and one 4 oz bottle of Fords friction modifyer. I now, never exceed 180 degrees even towing heavy. I guess LE oil works as advertised.
