The two auto transmissions are very different. The one behind the 5. 9 is the 48re 4 sp auto which pretty much dates back to the Chrysler 727 from the 60's with obvious updates along the way. The 6 sp auto behind the 6. 7 is a much more state of the art piece and features things like shift control buttons on the shifter to pick your gears if you like.

The 6. 7 has a rediculous amount of emissions controls on it. Have you looked underneath both to compare? There is a lot of extra junk on the 6. 7.

If you need/want an auto, the choice is tough. If you were considering a manual I would go 5. 9 all the way. The emissions system on the 6. 7 concerns me, lots of complexity, lots of computer power relied upon to make it function well. The new trans is defiantely much better, the new turbo with integrated exhaust brake is also much better (more effective). This seems typical in most new vehicles that as features, functions and controls are added, the amount of processor power is increased.

So you are either in the "keep it simple" camp, or in the "latest and greatest" camp. Both are likely to be great trucks. Most of the bugs seem to already be worked out of the new trucks. Seeing all this technology coming down the pike though, I personally opted for a 5. 9 six speed. Some thing I plan to keep for quite a while, and I appreciate its relative simplicity. Of course by that notion, I should have bought a '92 first gen twelve valve:-laf So there are compromises along the way depending on what you want/need, and the level of complexity in a vehicle you want vs. the features.

Go test drive the new 6. 7 with the auto I think you will end up buying one as for all the new Junk ie emissions stuff we are going to have to get use to it anyway might as well be sooner then later . I myself Like the feel of the new motor and trans and that is the direction I am heading .

BHolm said it exactly right. What transmission do you want. If you want the 6 speed manual, go with the 5. 9. If you want the auto, go with the 6. 7.

Me, I'd go with the 5. 9, 6 speed manual.

Being the owner of a new 6. 7 with over 19,000 miles on it I can certainly recommend it IF you are serious about having a REAL truck, not a toy.

I don't like the way you said that. The 5. 9 has been the workhorse of the industry for many years. How can you call it a toy?

Some consideration might also be made for the wealth of 5. 9 power upgrades availible. Eventually the 6. 7 may catch up. Then again as the electronics become increasingly complex will the mods be feasible? even possible?

As to the toy comment. I will assume you meant the Dodge diesel trucks in general are "real trucks". If you actually meant to infer that your 6. 7 auto can even hold a candle to the way my 5. 9 manual can pull... . well then, I'd like to see you bring that on;)

After looking at quite a few '07's, I ended up with a 5. 9L G56 to replace my '01. Knowing it's history, I just felt more comfortable with the older technology.

As far as the "Real" truck comment..... I'm sure it wasn't referring to the millions upon millions of miles driven and the proven results of the 5. 9L over the years. :-laf

I'm sure he meant not to buy a 6. 7 if you're just gonna putz around town. If you really work the truck as designed, it will have less problems... i. e. DPF etc.

The 5. 9 is a little more tolerant of 'putzing. '

I thought he (BHolm) said, 6 speed manual go 5. 9, and 6 speed auto go 6. 7.

Seems like most of the 6. 7's are turning out to be great trucks. Most that have them love them and they are raving about the transmission more than Chevy guys about their beloved Allisons. Seems pretty hard to make a bad choice. My buddy has a 6. 7 with a 6 speed manual and says it pulls like a champ. Not many miles yet, but his wife drive an 04 600 to compare it too. Scotty
