Which spare parts are good to have?

CEL problem

any one running grease in ther truck?

For a 2003 3500 auto 4wd SRW,



Is it nessasary to carry spare sensors, crank, map, electronic 4wd selector, etc... ?



I know a belt and radiator hoses are good to have, a idler pully. I'm used to the 12v and have the relay and the common issue stuff.



My real question is do I need to buy all these sensors and put them in the glove box?

I'm kinda in the same boat. I only have 70k but have been thinking about some prentative maint like belt, water pump, tensioner, etc. Is there a bad enough problem with the #4 (or was it #6?) inj. line to carry a spare?
 
I had 531k miles on my 03 when I sold it and never replaced any sensors. I personally wouldn't worry about the sensors. I would carry a spare fuel lift pump if you still have the pump on the back of the filter cannister. Also a spare fuel filter.
 
Belt and filters, and oil are all I carry.

Maybe as my miles go up I willl build a box with some of the more common issues, but so far I am not sure what they are.
 
The only spare parts I have ever carried on a routine basis is fuel filters. When I was transporting I usually carried my own Rotella oil and Fleetguard filters from Geno's also but I needed an oil change at 10k intervals in less than a month and never knew where I would be when change time rolled around.
 
I usually just carry a spare belt, fuel filter, and a spare lift pump. Like Gary Owen said, if you still have the one mounted on the back of the filter housing (like I do), it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a spare handy. This forum is full of all kind of horror stories about those lift pumps giving out at the most inconvenient times.

That's why I have the factory in tank pump upgrade. I don't want to be forced to change the lift pump while parked on the side of the highway in pouring rain.

Is this the lift pump which causes everyone to do the fass, which is after market electric fuel pumps? Is this a cummins part or genoes?
 
Hey Bill, what did that in-tank kit cost you? I hate this noisy FASS I have and I don't really need the extra flow anyway.



My local dealer installed it for $700 and well worth it! It's very quiet and the same set up as '05 and later trucks which has proven very reliable. My truck is stock power (305/555) and will stay that way so there's no need for additional volume.



I could have installed the pump myself for about what a FASS costs, but I'm getting to old to wrestle with the fuel tank, so I let them do it.

I am on the road 6mo. I an a snow bird. I got the bonnie box from Genos for my 03 and add the fuel transfer pump for 180. 00 for I still have the same pump that came on the truck also had them to replace the fan belt for one for the Jake brake.
 
On long trips out of town I carry a spare lift pump, the tools to change it out (I have an aftermarket pump), a fuel filter (not the stock one, a supplemental one), and a serpentine belt.
