Which Test Port for Fuel Pressure Gague

On Y2K trucks there are 2 fuel pressure test port fittings -The Inlet-protruding from the back of the fuel filter, and the Outlet- protruding from the injection pump next to the overflow valve. Which source would be the best location for the pressure gague? It seem to me that the outlet would give the most accurate readings as any restriction from the fuel filter would be included in the final pressure readings. Could you remove the shrader valve, screw on a 4AN Hose barb fitting and run a hose to a remote sending unit with a 1/8NPT hose barb fitting? Is this too simple? Am I missing anything?

Tom, I went with the Schrader port pre-filter as the SPA, according to Brandon, was seeing to much fluctuation (sp) post filter. I don't know how it would work with other gauges though. Otherwise, you are correct, just remove the Schrader valve before installing the 4AN fitting. Hope this helps.

I think that you've got it! I finally received my autometer electronic fuel pressure gauge (4361) and am going to mount the sender remotely as you describe. I'm thinking that the outlet port would give the more important readings, but I have been concerned with the fluctuations that Sir Bigsaint describes.

When you say remove the Schrader valve, do you mean unscrew the stem inside just like on a tire, then put the 4an fitting over the top?

Jerry: Yes, that's the proceedure. Remove the internal valve, just like on a tire Schrader.

Okay, next question, I went to the local auto parts store... 4an?? what the heck is that?? They had no idea. Is it the same as 1/4 npt or the sort? Or is 4an a specific size I just need to find a better auto parts store to get?

Chris, I have the SPA FP gauge and use the pre-filter location. So far, no problems with the vibration from the Cummins, guess time will tell. I purchased my FP sender/Schrader adapter from Brandon and he's setting these up so that the sender hangs straight down on a "T" fitting. I was just on the phone with Brandon recently and asked him if he has seen any problems with the Cummins shaking having a adverse affect on the electric senders. So far, NONE, and he has done over 30 SPA installs, I believe. Here's a link to Brandon's site, give him a call if you would like more info on the electric sender/FP install. Great guy to shoot the I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER with and he has really done his homework in regards to this topic.

Hey Guys-

Take a look at the new TDR issue, page 38. It goes over the electronic fuel guage setup, as well as equipment needed and problems associated with it. It seems that those of us with Y2K or later trucks may have some logistical difficulties. If the author is wrong, please let me know since I'm getting ready to put in guages in a week or two (next payday!), and I'd like to have this figured out before I start working.

Jerry: You need to go to a speed shop or get on the Summit (HTTP//www.Summitracing.com ) or Pegasus website (HTTP//www.pegasusautoracing ) and look under fittings. They both have 800 numbers and helpful techs. Just tell them what you are planning to do and they will source the needed parts.
