On the 3500 4X4 the standard tires are goodyear, the optional tires are michelin m&s. Which ones wear better and is there really a difference in snow? Where I live we get 3-5 inches of snow for a few weeks in the winter. But I need the 4X4 because ( it looks good #ad
) and I live on top of a small mountain, paved road but steep angle of ascent ( and descent #ad
).
Thanks
Dennis

Dennis the Goodyears are good tires but they are mainly for hiway use. The michelins are M/S rated but are not really agressive, plus they are a $195. 00 option. If you are planning on changing the tires then save the $195 and put it towards a set of Michelin A/T's or the tire of your choice. Regards Pete

Save your $200, dump those freakin Goodyears before you even leave the dealers' lot, and bring a new set of Michelins with you when you pick up your truck!

GO FOR THE MICHILINS!!!! I RUN THEM AND THEY'RE "E" RATED FOR HAULING LOADS. I DON'T KNOW IF GOODYEARS ARE SAFE YET. MY SON-IN LAW JUST LOST A NEW GOODYEAR TIRE THIS YEAR AND IT CAME APART WITH NO WARNING! IT COULD HAVE BEEN REAL BAD!! IT WAS ON A NEW FORD EXPLORER. GOOD LUCK!

My 98 came with michelin's, i hated them. I love the goodyears on my 01. I had 2 tread separations with the michelins (no, not like the firestones, but vertically between the treads) and will NEVER buy a set of michelin's again, EVER!

dmurdock, sorry to hear about the tire failure.
I went the extra $$$ for the Michelins when I ordered it. I now have 60K miles on them.
Fronts are 5/64ths, rears are 2-3/64ths. It's a bit of a hassle to rotate, I've only done it once. I have inspection today, and I hope they pass. They should.
Theyre still real good in the rain, I'd like to go until next month at least before replacement.
I want to get the Michelins that I see on the new trucks. I think theyre 255 or 265 75 16. Dam new trucks are about 4" taller than mine!!!
Mine are 245 75 16 LTX A/T/

My 01 ETH 3500 came with the Goodyears. I sold them and the wheels off to somebody with a 96 who needed new tires. Now I have a spare set of six '96 vintage 3500 wheels and simulators w/o tires on 'em if anybody wants a second set.

I replaced mine with Rickson 19. 5's. I have no idea what tire I'd get if I were buying new 16's. Probably that Yokohama A/T tire, but hard to say.

Had 2 sets of Badyears on my truck and hated them. The first set was so out of balance they were replaced on warranty (I paid the pro rated difference on an inflated retail price). The latest consumer report rated them at the bottom of the list. I now run 285 BFG's and love the look and ride.

Dont forget guys, that the Michelins et al that come on a new truck are NOT of the same quality as those we buy aftermarket! There was another thread about this a while back, and the members telling about worn-out OE tires in 12000 miles, the Costco replacements looked new at 40,000mi... . I still say, buy a set and take them to the dealer with you when you take delivery! The stock stuff sucks!

I have a 2500. I ordered my truck with the Michelins (LTX). They handle rain and snow excellent. I have 40,000 miles on them and they are still in good condition. Very good ride quality. I think the $195 is well worth it.

I had the Goodyears on me 98. 5 2500 4x4, wow... . were they the pits... . in the first 10,000m, I was constantly at the dealers with vibration, I couldn't even drive highway with my console up it would jump 'round so much. They turned my disc, my drums. At 20,000m, after balancing every 4,000m, I gave up and bought 4 LTX A/S, immediately, no shake, now at 50,000m, w/o an additional balance and rotation that are smooth as the day I put them on. I will by only Mich LTX, although next time a tad more aggressive tread. I couldn't believe they put those junk Goodyears on a $35K truck.

Most definetly Michelins, I have had 4 rams before this one. All had Goodyears, they were worn out by 25-30k. My truck now has Michelins and I got 25k on truck, tires look great. I remember a thread awhile back that a guy had Mich. and rotated every 10k and ran 65 psi all the around, had over 60k. I can believe it with the looks of mine.
Goodyear may make a good race tire(have on my drag car, 67 340 Dart) and a good car tire, but IMHO the truck tires are very bad.
Hope this helps, Scott

P. S. The ride is alot better that Goodyear also. This is my experience and opinion, sorry to hear about the problems with the mich. in above post. Also true about the quality on new trucks. The aftermarket is alot better, if so the Mich. should get alot more miles.

Here is a thought on the tire deal. Here in Lawton we are "blessed" to be the home of the largest Goodyear plant in the world. If you by a new truck and the tires are not what you want, you take it to the Goodyear store within 500 miles and they will swap you out for what ever you want that Goodyear makes on the truck that will fit, for just sales tax! And it makes no difference what brand of tire the vehicle came with. Pretty good deal i'd say by anyones standards. It's also agreat place to buy the take-offs cheap(how about $200. 00 for name band tires, new for a complete set of 16"s). Anyway, my point is this, maybe other tire brands have similar deals going in other places, might be worth looking into!Oh by the way, Coopers or BFG's are still my first choice #ad

Dennis, I opted for the Michelin 215/85 R16E M&S LTX's for the $200, now with 60K on them, I expect to get another 25K. Excellent tire overall. Not real good in snow, worse in soft sand. I'd like a more aggressive tire, but with DWR's we are real limited. Not too much out there in 215 E rated. I would replace with same when the tim comes.

I had the goodyears when the truck was new, I now have the michelins, the michelins hook up much better on wet pavement and seem to have a smoother, quieter ride.

One thing to keep in mind, is that the upgraded tires are $200± over and above the cost of the standard tires. I tend to agree with some of the others on this topic. I particularly didn't really care for the standard tire or the Michelin LTX M&S rated tire. I also felt they looked a little too small on the 4x4 truck. I knew someone who needed a new set of tires for just general highway hauling, so rather than spend the $200 plus on the LTX's, I just got the standard highway tires, and applied what I got selling them immediately when I got the truck, to the money I saved and got the set of tires I wanted, not spending much more than the factory upgrade.

I have BFG/AT/KO's on my Landcruiser. They are about the best tire you can buy for a Truck. Have you ever had a dealer credit the tires that came on a new Cummins and put on a premium tire like this without over charging for the difference?
