Im wanting to know which engine will be the best to own. I do some trailer pulling (7,000 to 15,000#). This would be my first cummins. would appreciate any feedback. Thanks:confused:

I have 2 for sale, a 97 12 valve, and a 98 24 valve. I bought the 97 to replace the 98, and haven't had any luck selling the 98. The 97 is a 5 speed, the 98 an automatic. Come test drive them and take which ever one you like home.

Honestly, I like the 24 valve engine better myself, but the 12 valve is eaiser to increase performance. I don't think you'll go wrong with either truck, as long as it's been taken care of.

First of all welcome to the TDR, and congratulations on your decision to own a Cummins (vs. one of them damn Ford's or Chevy's ;) )

You can't go wong with either. I obviously drive a 12v, but the more and more 24v I drive/ride in I am beginning to have a new apprecaition for them.

If I were to buy again, knowing what I know now after being a daily reader of the TDR for over a year, I still think I'd shop to buy another 12v, but if the right truck/price came up on a 24v I'd buy it.

Have you decided what transmission you want? That is a more important decision, IMO, than 12v/24v.

funny thing i've had both, somewhere along the line i've been brain washed lolo they gotten into my blood stream, either one will do the same,i've had lots of trucks and cars over the years but there is just something about these that i now can't live without. good luck with your choice,

I would consider transmission options more important than the engines. I have had both, if my 96 was a 5 speed manual I would still be driving it. Both are great trucks. ;) ;) ;)
