USA Today ULSD Prices

Alright TDR tell me which you would purchase please. Getting my brother in law into a CTD from Chevy gassers. Not spending a lot, just looking for reliability.

98 24v Quad Cab short bed, auto, stock, 207k

or

97 12v Club Cab, Long Bed, 5 sp, stock, 175k

Both are the same price. I am a 12v 5sp fan so my pick is the 97. The only real advantage the 98 has is the Quad Cab. First model year for the 24v, VP, and auto I look at as weaknesses. Plus, I have lots of spare parts laying around for 12v. Thanks for the info.

Thomas

Go with the 97. IMHO

If you are converting a friend, go with the 12v. More reliable and cheap to mod.

The 215 pump is a great base to start with.

One other thing. When I checked the 98 for codes a 1693 code came up. I know that is a companion code, but I wasn't able to get any other codes. Once we test drive te 97 I will have more information.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Bloomy,

Definately go with the 12V, you know the problems the early 24V have. Plus the 24V has an automatic and that also has problems when you turn up the juice.

Well we are going to Somerset to look at it tomorrow with cash in hand. Nobody try to car jack us I guarantee I would win :D Thanks for the votes.

After an 02 and 04, I went back in time to the 97 12v. My keeper truck.

I will say I sure miss the convenience of the quad cab. Does he have kids, dogs, or another important reason for continually accessing the back seat?

You want "reliability" 12v is simplicity and reliablilty all in one, not much to go wrong, andwhen it does, it is easy to fix.

I would put a 12 valver in my 3rd gen if I blew my motor, and it fit.

I own an '02 and love the truck. The LP/VP44 are a constant worry though. Think i've got it whipped with after-market pumps and lines but I just couldn't recommend anything with a VP44.

Go with the 12 valve.

Well, the 12v ran very well for a stock truck. Supposedly a cummins shop turned the pump up a little bit when the valves were adjusted. So mechanically it was sound. The body was very rough though. At one time it had been rolled onto the passenger side. There were putty sections with a different color of white in quite a few places. My brother in law is a bit more picky so we didn't take it. I would like to pick it up for a puller. The long wheel base would be nice. Thanks for the help. Still looking. Anybody have any for sale. Preferably a manual transmission. The club cab really isn't a problem since the previous truck was the same. It was a 98 chevy 1500 without additional doors.
