Bob,

I agree with Dune Racer's opinion of Fleetwood products. I have used an Avion fifth-wheel for several years and have had nothing but troubles with it.

Other considerations:
1. I agree that a travel trailer makes good sense, especially if you want to use a cap on the truck bed. We recently bought a used Holiday Rambler TT to replace the Avion fiver for that very reason.

2. If sway is a problem, a Hensley Arrow or a Pull-Rite hitch is the solution for travel trailers. Yes, they are expensive, but you retain the use of the truck bed.

3. Give some thought to slide-outs. They are nice when you are camped and can enjoy the extra space. While you are traveling, though, you may want to stop at a rest area, parking lot, or alongside the road and use the kitchen or bathroom in the trailer. Often you will not be able to use the slide-out there. How well can you get around in the trailer with the slide-out retracted?

4. Also, slide-outs require heavy frames and mechanisms. Watch the weight.

5. I agree 100 percent with Rob Hanson regarding holding tanks (and pipes too). Be sure that you will be able to use the trailer in all kinds of weather. We can't use the Avion as a guest house at Christmas here in southern Indiana because the pipes freeze.

6. Regarding which brand is best... Ask at RV parks. You'll find that EVERYONE will admit that Airstream has a reputation for excellence, even if they aren't pulling one. I also like Holiday Rambler. We owned one in the 1970's and have just bought another. The Newmar products (London Aire, Mountain Aire, etc. ) also seem to be particularly well made.

7. Remember, you will always pay a premium price for top quality, but paying a premium price will not guaranty that you get top quality. Our Avion was an expensive trailer that didn't live up to its price.

Your best source for information is the people in RV parks and these web sites. Most of us aren't trying to sell you something. Happy Hunting.

I have owned a Nomad (Skyline), Komfort, Wilderness (Fleetwood) and now a Kit. I would agree with staying away from Fleetwood products.

Out of the four different brands I have owned, I would say that the Komfort and the Kit are definetly of higher quality and craftmanship. And by all means, if you are trying to decide between a travel trailer and a 5th wheel, go with the fifth wheel, they tow and turn much better than a TT.

I know everyone has an opinion on every brand. My wife end I are looking at used 5vers. I think we have it narrowed down to 2. One is a 1995 Coachmen Catalina 28 very good condition. The other is a 1994 Gulfstream Innsbruk 30ft it is also very good condition. They both pretty much have the same layout. The person who owns the Gulfstream got caught in a hail storm while traveling the roof was aluminum skinned and received some damage. The owner had the rof repaired and went with the rubber roof. Both units have the super slide. The Coachmen is about $16,900 while the Innsbruk is about
$12,000. Does anyone have any thoughts about the Gulfstream Innsbruk to that of the Coachmen. Thanks for your inputs.

UPDATE ON JAYCO>>>>>>>

I got my jayco on Friday Sept. 09 and had to take it back on saturday. The fridge did not work, elect. water heater did not work. Fit and trim was ABSOLUTELY HORRIFFIC. . Gaps big enough to put pencils in etc. . Floor was waek in bathroom. . bedroon slideout was 1" off the wall. . Even the tires were 15# under inflated. .

My apoloigies for saying Jayco was any good. . My "Wanderer" by Thor was a better unit... . I'll keep you posted if the dealer, Manteca trailer, Ca can fix the box of wood and all the problems. .

I hope this is not going to be the begining of a long manufacturer/dealer and me battle. .

We have the coolest trailer!! I have a vintage 1974 Airstream 29' trailer with rear bath. When we pull into a park, people are always commenting "cool trailer" or "can I come look inside??". It is really sweet when your camping neighbor has a $100,000 motorhome and wants to come check out the ole' Airstream. This trailer is in excellent shape and everything works. It was bought for $4000, so they can be bargains if bought right. My trailer has load equalization hitch and sway control. COmbine that with independant suspension and it makes for one of the sweetest pulling tag trailers.
Old Airstreams are not for everyone, but I sure like mine... ... . don't mind the attention either!! :)

We bought a Wanderer by Thor of Ca. It tows with ease and is very well made. I want to add a little power to my truck for the hills. Best of all,my wife loves it. When we tow on flat land I can keep 70 with no trouble. The price is in below the $30,000 mark, but I have added a few things that has put it over that. We have had it for a year and a half and would buy another one.
Good luck
