Head Gasket Question

Hey all,

Well, it's time to finally start deciding on what turbo I'm going to buy. Pickup is in my signature, and my turbo is the last "major" BOMB I plan on doing (right now of course, as BOMBs are bound to happen in the future).

I was planning on the PDR HX-40/16 or 17 cm2 exhaust housing, but Denis has the exact same setup as me with a PDR HX40/16... His does however have (I think this is what he told me) an 80 cm2 compressor housing (that's possible, right?). While it runs awesome at sea-level to 200 ft, it flat out SUCKS here at 4000'. Takes a minimum of 20 seconds to build 10 psi boost with both brake and throttle to the floor... takes twice the time to spool that mine does with Comp on 5x5 (granted I have the HY-35/9, but still, it's too much lag!!!)

I could probably live with the major lag while I'm here at home for the summer, but I go back to school in Arizona and I live at 5000' there, so I know it'd be a major problem. HX-35 is not an option, as Cummins4Life w/ his has EGT issues as bad or worse then I do and he only has DD2's!

Here's what I want: I want the spool of my 9cm^2 exhaust housing (I would even live with the spool of a 12 cm^2 housing) and the flow of the HX-40... cause even though we have identical setups (minus the turbo) Denis' pickup pulls infinitely harder then mine the entire time...

So what do I look at? Is an HX-40 my best bet? Is KwikKurt (I think that's his name) still around and making the KwikSpool B1's? I'd pay a good deal more money then the HX-40 if it'll do what I want it to at 5000' elevation.

Sorry for being long winded... thanks for any insite. Josh

I did some reading, Looks like KwikKurt's K45 might be what you need, dont know if it has a working wastegate yet. An HX35/14 might work, would still get warm though. Twins maybe? :D

Twins, huh Zach?!?! Tell ya what... you split the cost of a twin setup with me (to put on my truck of course) and I'll let you ride around with me anywhere you want and we can pick on any and all other guys rolling around Klamath! :) Have you seen the lifted, red, crew-cab chevy rolling around w/ the gauges and all the go-fast stickers? No doubt a Bradley job, and one who needs spanked!!! Drag Comp will be here tomorrow and I'll finally be blowing smoke again. Went to Schaffer's synthetic in the engine tonight, and will do the transmission as soon as I get a new filter. I can get the synthetic stuff through work for cheaper then Delo 400 and the transmission fluid is only about $0. 30 more per quart then cheap stuff from Napa, so I'm figuring what the he!!. Keep in touch, and let me know if you figure anything else out on this... Denis is looking for a new turbo too... loves the HX-40 in Corvallis and hates it here.

Anyone know of a website for KwikKurt or anybody have some opinions?

Josh

EDIT: Zach, also just saw that you got the PE4200 put on... PM me with the price if you wouldn't mind... my FP doesn't like to stay above 4 PSI at WOT... you have a FP gauge yet? What's the 4200 running at WOT w/ your setup?

I'll split the cost with you for yours if you split the cost with me for mine! ;)

Saw that Chevy one time, I'll keep lookin. I've been smokin the Bradly's Dodge every chance I get, but he still wont play. Sounds like a good deal on the fluids. I need to change out the transmission's soon, dunno which way to go. Kurt doesnt have a website, his email is > KDRVTRUCKPERFORMANCEINC@MSN. COM and phone is > 505-534-0434

4200 = 22@ idle and 17 on 5x5. Idlepsi is said to drop 1-2 when its broke in.

PE4200 sounds good... guess I've got to get a second job to pay for my bad habit of BOMBing. Bradley never seems to want to play... I've tried quite a few times too... won't even look at you after going through the smoke cloud. The guy w/ the reg. cab Ford got a ride in mine and Denis' pickups last Saturday... he's supposedly running ATS's ball-bearing turbo now, and says it runs hard... wouldn't race after a ride though... don't know why  :D :D

Emailed Kurt... hope to hear back soon... still probably a month away from a new turbo, but need to start looking now.

Josh,

The others are correct you need twins to even come close to what you are asking. I have run both the B-1 and a PDR-40 and I can tell you that both make equal power. The PDR-40 has much better bottom end and the B-1 is more durable if you plan on running drugs and abusing it.

A solution might be to get the PDR-40 now and then later once finances allow get hold of Jason at Northwest Custom and have him build you one of his new twin setups using the PDR-40 and PDR-H3TB.

Doug

FYI, There are three versions of the B-1 that spool faster then the Standard B-1. Then later you can add the B-2 for the Big Turbo in your twins. :D :D
