I think it is time to upgrade my turbo after 400k plus miles of hard work. I haul frequently at heavy weights over 30k and money is an issue;) . Also I need to keep or change out the exhaust brake.

So which turbo is best for towing heavy? And why?

Does BD sell the parts to change from an elbow brake to a remote?

I love mine - see sig. Minimal lag and good boost at low rpm. I got my HX35 from Piers just before he reinvented the HX40 - that one sounds terrific! Craig

The best bang for your buck is the PDR modified HX-35 :D This will alow you to keep your elbow mount brake and if you want you can keep the exhaust housing you have. I've got #2 off the line without the oiling updates it currently has 30,000 miles on it. I love it:D It's recomended for the 350hp range my latest run on DD's dyno 477hp(#2 only), Max recomended boost 40psi I've seen 50psi (neither is recomended by the manufacturer but limits are made to be tested) I've drag raced, street raced, dyno'd, done a tug of war, and sled pulled along with towed during those miles. This truck is my daily driver the other stuff is just for fun :p What I'm getting at is this turbo is TOUGH and killer on the street. For what your talking I think this turbo is your best bet. Oo.

Housing size

J@NWC: What size exhaust housing are you running on the PDR HX35? Sounds like a good way to go. I am just wondering about EGT's at higher fueling levels such as yours.

I went from a HX-35/16 to the Peirs Super HX-40/16. The Super turbo is a great turbo, I would highly recomend it!!!!!! Bpine also thinks it is the best so far in his quest for a towing turbo that allows him to use all his power towing.

Either turbo mentioned above will suit you just fine. The PDR 35 will save you a few bucks by not haveing to change the exhaust brake but if you want the best you will have to go for the PDR 40. I think the 40 would be happier on a 350 hp + truck. I had to take the 40 off last night to put it on the actual owners truck tomorrow and I am a little sad. :{ It sure works great. I towed in some real hot temps with the 40 last weekend and it looks like I will need more air than even the 40 can provide but it is still the best I have tested for towing so far. I will not be happy untill I can use all the power I have for towing and I am still a ways from that Dee.

Went ahead and ordered the Piers HX35 after talking to Al and digesting all the info on TDR. Funds were an issue, had to put a new clutch in about 3 weeks ago, (SBC 13 OFE), and I could'nt afford to deal with the exhaust brake issue at this time. I'd wait a little to get the 40 but I think the stock turbo is getting a bit too much play in it after all the hauling I've done. I would sure hate to loose one after hearing what Strick9 and others went through. Down time is also a major issue. Hopefully it will be here the first of next week.

Thanks for the responses,

Paul

I think you made a good choice on the turbo. I am headed towards the same build as yours. I like your dyno numbers and the miles on your motor. What fuel plate are you running? I have the #11 in the stock position and just did the same clutch as yours. I have been thinking of doing the 370's and turbo at the same time, but will need to save up some $$$'s.

I'm running a 16 non waste gated housing. Yes the modified 40 fronm PDR is better suited for the higher fueled trucks and for towing with them. Twins would be probably a better choice (TURBO's Blair!) but as far as the question asked when money was the isssue(keeping the elbow mount brake no new down pipe) that's the one that makes the most sense.

EGT's How fast do you want to see the needle hit the stop peg:rolleyes: My right foot still controlls that. I can tow play or what ever I want but I can't stuff my foot in it and hold it there. My next step is the PDR cam (on orderOo. ) Then probably a PDR Modified 40, twins would be nice (TURBO's blair!) but not in the immediate budget:( of course all of this will probable just make room for more fuel:rolleyes:

Hey Dee, I know you can only tow so fast I just haven't figured out what that is yet. :D

Jason, I talked with Pius at Bell turbo yesterday about the twins and we are getting closer. He want's me to test two more singles first then we will have the info we need to proceed. This is going to take a while because Pius has to run a bussiness to make money at the same time but we will get it.

pwknapp, you will be happy with your choice of turbo, I have one on my truck now it is what I use between testing most of the time. I have never had a problem with it and it works great.

Blair I also see twin in my future but not for towing. I find I us alot less throttle towing than I do just playing around. I kind of worry about pulling the hitch off the trailer towing :--) :--)

It's cool to have you doing all this prework for us guys, just as you did on clutchs, Thanks Dude

No worries Dee it is kinda fun. I am mostly concerned about making the twins work for towing, not to go faster but so that I don't have to watch the EGT guage like a hawk. I put the PDR HX-40 on the 24 valver tonight and it seems to work very good. The boost was 38 lbs at 1235 degrees and before with the HY it was 1550 at 42 lbs. He is going to tow soon so we will see. The lag was not bad at all. He has DD II's and a comp box.
