i posted my plans for my truck which included a hx 40 turbo and you people disagreed. :) which i appreciate. if i am not to use that one. which turbo should i use?

i am taking a 98 manual and putting: 370 inj, airbox, 4" exh, #10 plate, 3k spring kit, guages, and i am trying to get it right the first time.

i am towing a 30' trailer and i would like to tow it not drag it, but not kill the truck either. i know you guys have the answers ;)

links to related suggestions are helpful so i can read up on it thanks

NBowlin,

I would call Piers and ask him. You can see my sig, and you are going to have almost the same setup as me. I would think an HX-40 would be the turbo you would want. I have the HX-35 with a 16 cm housing, and it works for me because I use a valet switch to tow with. I'm not sure what kind of turbo lag you are looking at with the 40. That would be the only reason I could see not to have it. If I didn't have to change my e-brake, that's what I would go to.

Get the 4,000 rpm kit and the H. D. valve springs you won't regret it. As far as the turbo goes you can use a HX35 hybrid $600. ? from Piers. Call and talk to Piers he won't do you wrong. If you can afford it the Switzer from Pius of Bell Turbo is another choice a great turbo but expensive at about $2,000. 00

Rams-n-Hogs - With the exception of the 16 cm housing, we pretty much have the same set-up.

If you use the valet switch when you tow, do you have any of the power from your BOMBs? I would think it would be less than stock.

I have a US Gear Exhaust brake. It mounts down stream, just in front of where the Cat was ( :) ). I considered the HX40, but am not sure of the gain if I leave the exhaust brake restriction.

Wayne,

Yes, I still have plenty of power to tow. The valet switch slows down the fueling and boost. It is still better than stock. Cuts EGT's way down. If I'm not loaded, I have a hard time hitting 1000 on the pyro. Loaded, (6000 lbs), it will hit between 1100-1200 but it takes a long time to get there. Smokes just a little more than stock, too. When the valet switch is off, the truck runs normally. Lots of heat, and lots of smoke. :D And it's a lot quicker, too. :D If I had a 4-inch exhaust brake, I probably wouldn't hesitate to try Piers HX-40. Haven't towed my 5th wheel, yet. Will be a while before I do that, so I can't say what it's like with 10-12000 lbs. Which housing are you using?

I went with the PDR HX40 and have a similar setup to what your looking at. Towing a 16' steel goose neck with 6500+lbs on it I didn't have to worry about watching the pyro like a hawk. Yeah I'd have to keep an eye on when passing up hill at over 70 mph :D but still not a problem.

Unloaded I don't have to worry about EGT's unless my foots in it for alot longer than it should be. Yeah spool up is probably a little slower than with an HX35 but I didn't notice much difference and it's a small trade off for lower EGT's.

My $0. 02

The valet switch control splices in the boost line to the AFC housing. Piers makes a valet switch that will give you full boost signal to the AFC housing or no boost signal to the AFC housing. I have a valet switch with a third position, that is adjustable anywhere between the two, this allows smoke and EGT control and still allowing fueling at a slower rate this allows the turbo to spool reducing smoke and EGT's.

Rams-n-Hogs - I am still with the stock turbo. I am undecided, pull the 370's and go with the 16 CM housing, or have my HX40 (18 CM housing) rebuilt and try with the US Gear Ehxhaust Brake as a bottle neck.

Woodenhead - How could your foot be in it longer than it should be?

1dslram - Whats this valet switch with a third position, that is adjustable anywhere between the two? Where do we get the parts? Explain the adjustable.

From a stand still at the lights (or wherever) through 2,3,4 and into 5, foot on the floor through every gear. By the time I back off in 5th the law say my foots in it longer than it should be:D

Wayne,

Funny you should say you're still on the stock turbo. I've been thinking about putting my 12cm housing back on, (for testing purposes). After I put the 370's in, I noticed I had virtually no turbo lag, and it spooled REAL quick:D , especially compared to the 16. I never tried that setup towing, though, so I never got a read on EGT's. I'm almost thinking the 12 would be better on the bottom end, which is what I want anyway. I rarely go over 70. :D
