Which type brake controller?

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Best route?

West LA or East TX?

I need to install an electric brake controller.

Which type do you recommend?

Inertia or cable to brake pedal.

I don’t mind spending a couple of bucks, good brakes are real important!! I’ll be towing a 7000# car hauler at first. I’ll also be shopping for a fifth wheel over the next year or so. See sig for truck.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Tekonsha Prodigy

Jeff,

I use the Tekonsha Prodigy (http://www.tekonsha.com/tekcat/prodigy.html) and love it. No playing around with sensitivity adjustments, and works in reverse too! I tow a 13,000# 5th wheel, an 8,000# TT, and a 9,500# Car Hauler (weighs that much with the car on it of course). Iv'e never had a problem. I got mine at Camping World. Came with the pocket mount kit and the harness for a bit over a C-note.

A great deal of the guys here (myself included):D are running with the Jordan Ultima 2020 controller. Excellent choice. Can be easily ordered here Jordan .

I tried a Prodigy & towed one time with it. I went to a Jordan, and love it. The trailer & truck brakes work together now. The Jordan is a much better system. Just read the instructions prior to installing, and you will have no problems. I installed mine in the ashtray slot. The Prodigy was ok, but not equal to the Jordan.

Very UNhappy w/ my Voyager.

If you set it for a smooth stop at low speeds, it doesnt have enough power for high speed stops. And if you set it to where it has good power for high speed, it wants to rip the trailer off the back at slow speed. Have to constantly re-adjust for the situation. IMO - Junk, dont waste your money on this one.

Considering going to the jordan, or at least the prodigy.

Jordan install article

I'll have to throw in with pro-Jordan crowd. It really makes the truck and trailer brake as a unit. No more push-pull from the trailer like the Voyager I have on my Jeep.

If you want to see how I did the install on my truck and get a few helpful hints, check the link in my sig.

Also have to agree about the Jordan Brake Contoller. Have mine mounted just to the left of the ash tray. Very convenient and out of the way. Really a simple install by carefully reading directions. Big plus is truck and trailer brakes being proportional to each other.

Jordan Ultima 2020 - I've used the ramped single-output and the inertial in the past for towing 5vers. They can't compare with the truly proportional response of the Jordan.

Jordan 2020, My bride would quit taking her turn at driving if I installed another inertia controller. Works just like advertised and that is a rarity these days. Last brake control to work like that was hydralic activated units from the 70's. :D

I'll throw in another vote for the Jordan.

For some reason my cable was kinda jerky when I first mounted the display unit, but that may have been because I had it way off to the RIGHT of the ashtray. I moved it so that the cable is directly in line with the brake pedal and it now works great!

Of course that puts the display unit directly below the steering column so it's kinda hard to see it, but once you get it set up you really don't need to see what it's doing... it just works. :D

Go for the Jordan.

Draw-Tite Activator

Aw, shucks. I'm always the contrarian. I use a Draw-Tite Activator. I prefer the type with the digital readout that indicates the current being sent to the brakes. I have used them under the worst conditions; bad roads, dust, worse roads, flying grit, and no roads. I've only had one fail. I especially like the graduated manual braking that I can send to the brakes to make the trailer behave.

Had an Activator, now a Prodigy.

The difference is NIGHT & DAY.

Prodigy is cheaper and lifetime warranty, also like the digital readout.

I'm sure the Jordan is great also.

Thank you all very much for your input! I really appreciate your willingness to share experiences and help me to avoid the bad ones.

Thanks again

Jeff

Wowzers! Now I have to look at a Prodigy. Oh, the choices... .

Would like to replace my controller with the Prodigy. Where is best place to order? Camping World has them for $134. 00 if in President's Club. Is that where everyone orders them?

I used a Draw Tite Activator for about 5 years. It worked on the time-delay principle and you adjusted the delay and braking force. I liked it. When it failed on the morning of a trip, I went to Camping World and got the Tekonsha Voyager. It uses the inertia weight principle and so has to be mounted within a certain arc from horizontal or vertical. It is OK but more of a pain to get adjusted right.

I later pulled the Activator apart and it looks like if I resolder one of the leads to the circuit board, it would work.

I haven't used the Jordan.
