I'm in the middle of setting the timing on my '98 12 valve (215hp engine). I forgot to look at which way the lock washer was oriented when I removed it(middle of bow pointing out toward nut or in towards pump gear). Does it matter which way it is installed???

Thanks,

With the washer on the shaft with the split at the top. . . the end that curves toward the pump gear is on the right, the other end curving out toward you is on the left. That way if the nut were to try and back off, the sharp edge of the split theoretically bites into the nut and stops it.

It is a lock washer. Flip it over and look at. Works either way.

I guess you might call it more of a split wave washer than a lock washer. The sides are not a mirror image of each other like with a normal lock washer where you can't tell any difference if you flip it over. You can see what I mean in the picture.

Anyways, I installed it with the "bow" facing out towards the nut, since that seemed to give the most grabbing power against backing off. Hopefully it holds, and hopefully I got that stinking shaft clean enough so it doensn't slip! I used almost an entire can of brake cleaner, and finished up with some electrical contact cleaner, so now my oil is probably contaminated. :{:)

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Thanks for making me feel intelligent hsmith :-laf

CTD12 it should hold fine that way. In all honesty the thing that happens is the gear slips on the shaft, you don't ever hear about a nut coming loose ever. . . it's on there good at 144 ft/lbs.

Hopefully your timing holds. I had mine set to 15 at a shop several years ago. Within a couple years I had the cold stumbles again and had another shop set it at 16. 5, they said it was at 12. 5-13 (can't remember exactly) so it must have slipped. Now I've got cold stumbles again. Fuel pressure is good, I'll bet mine slipped again. Looks like it's either time for me to buy a timing kit of have another shop set it again, maybe 18 this time.

Good Luck,

Mike
