Low.Low mileage CTD

I by no means intend to start a heateddebate but which year CTD is best in the opinion of the highly capable members which their are many as far as dependability, service and bombability. I have a 2001 ETH/DEE I am considering a new 6. 7 CTD chassis mount or keep the one I have.

I am sure most will say the 98 model year because it was last of the 12 valve and first of quad cab combined until 98. 5 then it was 24valve.

Will the ones sold before 2007 have the same emissions equipment as the later ones will, IE particulate filters and catalytic converters. IMHO if you could get one before they put those on if would likelly be worth it, but if they will only come with them I would stick with what you have.

I have one of each. 2nd gen, and 3rd gen. 2nd gen haveing 4:10 gears, and the 3rd gen. HO, haveing 373s. The third gen will pull the legs out from under the 2nd gen, despite the gear diff.

I believe that as with everything , the newer ones are more refined . Major improvements in brakeing, and other features. But still a long way to go to perfection.

$$$$$$$$ is the determining factor.

I think the 3rd gen has the advantage of the best handling and steering of all and can make a lot of useable power with low EGTs. However the most fun to me would be a 97 or 98 215hp. Only reason I left 96 off is for the PITA screw on fuel filter and vacuum assist brakes. One day I will get a 12V again, it's fun to be able to turn wrenches for more power, any fool can plug in some connectors.

As much as I loved my '01, I gotta say the 3rd gens are better. I'm currently sitting at $390 in TOTAL REPAIRS spread over almost 142K. That $ includes the $100 deduc twice, without which would maybe raise the total to $1000.

so far my repairs have been, and this is just off the top of my head.

--front axle joints, $100 deduc

--Hanger bearing assembly and 2 u-joints, the other $100

--Front driveshaft CV, $122

--Rear u-joint $30

--$35 to hookup to dealer computer to find nothing

--LP, free under warranty

I get a funny feeling that the next 140K won't be quite as cheap. Probably not even the next 14k, but i ain't complaining.

The vast majority of those miles are towing. Average fully loaded gross weight is somewhere in the upper 30's K (38ish). I've been known to top 42k.

BTW, front pads are still factory. just checked them last friday when I put on new tires. Must be dang near 50% there yet. I'll wear out the truck w/o ever replacing the front pads. Anyone need a set, they've been sitting on the shelf since last winter... :-laf

This '04. 5 might drives me nuts with all is little quirks, but it just keeps going and going and going. (I'm gonna regret that)
