chrysler has admitted that they have system wide problems with the rear ends and most likely will not resolve before 2005. Chrysler has notified dealers they will not pay for one more rear and removal. You have a noise guys not a problem

On my truck the rear end whines only when I let off the gas pedal. The faster I am going, the louder it sings. About 2200 miles and many, many gallons of fuel.

I have read this post about three times already. What is your source?

Bringing this one back to the top .....

32* out this morning, and my hoot owl is back ! When this first showed up back in April, all of the symptoms were EXACTLY the same. At that point, the truck was bone stock - less than 1000 miles. It now has 19,800 miles, with an AFE PG7 and self-gutted intake tube. It seems like it is the most prevalent at about 1500 RPMs, 20-25 MPH, with a slight tip into the throttle, and not at operating temperature. Once the engine temp gets to about 180*, it will go away completely, regardless of the ambient air temp. All intake and intercooler connections are tight. I know for sure that it is not the rear axle. It is coming from somewhere cab-forward. Anything above about 45* outside, and I NEVER hear it. I'm convinced it is harmless, but it sure does bug the hell outta me. :(

Mine is doing the exact same thing and it is definatly a rear gear whine, started this summer after towing my TT.

I got some new AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR it is new stuff that just came out,but I havent had a chance to put it in yet,but I will this weekend and I will see if it goes away. My truck only has 5800 miles on it and I got it back in May so it dont get driven to often.

I had a low speed whine that appeared to be coming from the transmission area. Disappeared when the replaced the ring and pinion. Must have been rear axle noise telegraphing up the drive line. Weird.

It kind of sounds like a bad differential. It does it worse when it is cold.

Mine does it also but only for the first mile or so when cold. Really can't make it repeat after a few miles, but I'll try again tonight on the ride home. Yes, it does sound like a differential with too much backlash when you let go up the throttle. :(

Mine has made the same sound since new now have 15k. I just tell my wife its singing to me, now the other day I was pulling a 7% grade empty pyro about 1000 degrees and the noise came back, loud. Then it would do it at around 55 mph, it was foggy and cold on a straight away I shut the motor off and the noise was still there, it is coming from the front passenger side but cant figure it out. I did notice that the radio antenna was really vibrating???

Ugh. Mine does the same thing... . I get a "normal" whine at 25-30 mph after just shift ing into 4th ... AND... as a bonus I get the freakin' hoot owl noise on cold mornings too. I've got 6K miles and am thinking about changing the rear diff fluid to see if it helps at all. If not, I'm thinking about bypassing the dealer and going to a good rear end shop. I took my truck to the dealer a few weeks ago (before the hoot owl emerged) and they said everything was perfect - the shims were adjusted just right - then someone here informed me that these rear ends don't have shims... . great - maybe thats the problem - somehow some shims got into my differential! :-laf :(

My only advice would be to change the diff fluid (I would not use mopar fluid) to see if that makes any difference. I didn't see where you have done that yet. It may be a very inexpensive fix for you.

I changed both of mine (front and rear lube) at 15k miles. No difference.

Coincidentally enough, my buddy called me last night, and asked me if my truck had the hoot owl noise. He has got the identical truck to mine, only different color. He's got the noise too.

Here's his take. He's a trans guy, works for Borg Warner, came from Hydra-Matic. He curious about the gearset(s) in the 48RE. He said that it almost sounds like a spur-cut (straight cut) gear whining when cold. After thinking about it, and listening some more, I think he may be on to something. I really don't think that my noise is coming from the back. I get it on decel and accel, within the speed and RPM range that I posted before.

Who's our resident 48RE expert that can lend an expert opinion on the *Hoot Owl in the Trans Idea* ???? :D

I've got a hoot owl in my rear diff that doesn't like going down the road on a cold morning. I get a distinctive Howl from 30mph to 35mph till it's in the operating range. Then all is fine. I still need to change my diff fluids and am at 38,000. BTW, mine is a 6spd.

I also have the whine between 20 and 25 mph. I also have another problem.

My voltage reads 12 volt and I can hear the selinoid clicking when I start it. When the whining starts my voltage increases to 14 volts. I have 8500 miles on my truck

I have an 04 600 with 15000 miles on it with the 48re. I have noticed this same sound for the last couple of months. I have considered taking it in to get checked out but haven't yet. I notice it most first thing in the morning. I have also had a "Clunking" sound coming from under the dash on the passenger side when I shift from park or reverse into drive. I had the dealer look into that one and they blamed it on my Bully Dog air intake. That was a couple of months ago and it still does it. I can't really refute their diagnosis as I had the air box put on when I bought it. I hope we can get to the bottom of this one.

Yep, I had the noise, too. Took it to the dealer 3 times, got the rear end stories, and that they couldn't even hear it…

I got the cheap stethoscope out and put the truck up on jack stands, under the rear axle. I put the wife to work at the controls, and crawled under it on a crisp 25-degree morning, as it only really did it good on cold mornings. Nope, rear end was normal. No unusual noise. Transmission case was normal, too. Center bearing (hanger bearing) on driveline, howling very loud in the stethoscope. Went back to dealer, had a screaming match in front of 6 employees and customers, and they finally replaced the hanger bearing. Perfectly quiet, for about a year. It's doing it again, now. I wish someone would make an aftermarket bearing that was heavy duty. By the way, they wrecked the transmission seal, 4x4 oil all over the bottom of the truck. Another trip to the dealer.

Well, it is a dodge… too bad Cummins doesn't make a pickup.

Howl on mine. Started @ 168,000 miles. I'm running amsoil in the diffs. Put the truck on jacks and it made loud howl after 20 mph. It gets real loud @ 70 mph. I took it to my rear end and transmission guy and he said it was a bearing in the rear end. I'm taking it in tomorrow to get 4. 56 put in. I can't wait to feel the difference.
