Whine/Roar

Coming back from Texas, I started hearing a whine/roar. Thought it might be the tires on the road surface... ... ... ..... not. It was 105 degrees. Drive tires 145 degrees. Banjo housing 180 degrees. It was hotter than a depot stove.



I have isolated the sound... ... ... . now intermittent... ... ... ... to an accessory on the engine. So besides the:



1) Idler pulley



2) A/C Compressor



3) PS pump



4) Water pump



5) Alternator



All of which have 225K on them, what else should I look for? Now that I am back in cooler temps, it has stopped... ... ... ... ... but I do not want to chance a failure on the road... ... ... ... ... so I need to R&R the offending culprit.

Pull the belt off and feel each piece

I have seen many idlers fail on the 06 models

As well as too many waterpumps

A/C compressor clutches fail on '06s also. I had to replace one that had only one intact rivet out of three remaining at a little over 200k on my '06.

But I remember a ragged, rough noise at idle, not a highway hum or roar.

Don't forget the tensioner pulley (in addition to the idler you mentioned)

Another biggy is the fan support bearing. All kinds of strange and weird noises occur when it goes bad.

At 225k, start thinking about rebuilding/replacing the alternator... my 04. 5 had a "noise" I couldn't put a finger on, and didn't show even with a stethoscope. Replaced the alternator as PM, and my noise disappeared. I had absolutely no brushes left in the alternator, and I was really surprised it was still working.
