Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Whining Whirring Noise

My truck developed a whining/ whirring noise,It occures between 1900 and 2100 rpm, not always constant, seems to happen more when the boost is around 10 psi, I dont think it is a boost leak because if you go full throttle it goes away and I can still see 30 to 31 psi on the boost gauge. When it is making this noise I can change the pitch or tone of the noise by slightly adjusting the throttle pedal. I did the search and found the issue with the heater hose orifice for the 98-99 trucks, would my early 2001 have the faulty orifice in it. Any input would be appreciated. I've got a 2001 that does EXACTLY the same thing you describe. I dug up an old post in the 24v forum to see if anyone else has seen it. Mine happens under boost at freeway speeds. It's more exaggerated with the back window open. Maybe I'll just try looking for the restriction and see if that helps. Do you know if the orifice did any function that will be missed if I take it out?

Still Looking

I have checked all my boost hoses fittings and the gaskets on the air horn and grid heater. Still have the noise. Took the heater hose off, their is no orifice on the 2001. I have looked through the search again and from what some describe I may look at my carrier bearing and u-joints because last night I went from reverse to 2nd gear and heard the familier tick-tick noise associated to a bad u-joint, I have 47000 on the truck. So it might be time to check th driveline out. Any other ideas or input would be appreciated.

hey,

Try checking and slightly adjusting the rubber connector gaskets between the turbo and the air intake on the engine. I brought my 98. 5 into the dealer to get the throttle linkage replaced and noticed a whisleing noise at about 2200 rpm after I got the truck back. Looked around on the site and found a post that recommended this. The dealer had to remove the pipe between the intercooler and the engine intake during the service. I readjusted the rubber connectors and never heard the sound again.

I was so happy that I didnt have to get a new turbo.

I don't think it would be ujoints. The pitch would change with wheel speed, not application of the throttle. I'm talking about what you (badinfluence) said about being able to change the pitch. I'll check all the air plumbing connections.

I found the noise, it was the center u-joint on the rear drive shaft. one cap had no needle bearings. While I was at it I BOMB'ed the slide yoke by dlilling it and adding a grease zerk. There was no grease on it at all and had to use some persuasion (HAMMER) to get it off the truck.

I wouldnt of thought the noise I had would be in the driveline. But live and learn. Thanks for the input and suggestions all were appreciated.

Wow, I sit corrected. Are you talking about the carrier bearing ujoint? I've got a short bed, and one piece shaft, but it could be another joint. I'll check all mine out and see if I can come up with anything. Glad you found you answer.

reduaram, it was the u-joint directly behind the carrier bearing. You might check your u-joints, your post said the noise is worse with the back window open. Hope you find it.
