I'm thinking about adding a new air intake system like the AFE stage I or II, but I've been hearing about how they produce a loud whistle, so bad you can't hardly have a conversation outside the truck with it idling. Can anyone out there with one tell me how bad they whistle and what it sounds like inside the cab? Thanks -- Doug

With a HY35, it will not be that loud. But with a HY35 do you really need an intake? I changed to a PDR35W12 and it was noisy and airy sounding with my BHAF, I just put the air box back on and am happier with the sound. Wish I would have done that before my 7K RV trip. BTW, at idle, it does not whistle! SNOKING

I added an AFE stage 1 and there is a noticeable whistle for sure. However, it's not that loud and I have gotton used to it and don't really hear it anymore. Kinda sounds like a jet in taxi.

Mine whistles pretty loud with my HX40 and AFe stage one w/ Amsoil 4510 dry filter. I like the whistle, but it does bug my "non-gearhead" wife. She talks on the phone alot while I'm driving and it does make that hard to do. I don't like to talk on the phone when I drive so it doesn't effect me much. Another thought, if you stay with the 35, leaving the silencer ring in should help alot, I took mine out cause I like th whistle, but thats just me...

I find if I steady state (hold the same speed on level ground) the whistle is more of a purr. The more you accelerate it the louder it gets. You do get use to it after a while.

IF it bothers you, you can go to earplugsonline.com and get industrial environment earplugs that will block high frequency sound but allows normal conversation.

I use a pair in the truck to block high frequency, and a different pair at night to block wife's snoring (low frequency). Makes life MUCH easier.

Would not help the cell phone voice pickup though.

Do they make any that block out the normal noises like "You're driving too fast" or "No, you can't buy that for your truck, I need new shoes". :-laf If they do I'll buy stock in that company. :D

I have an AFE stage II. Yes the turbo can be heard but I do not consider it that loud. Truthfully, I just love listening to it. I am a bit confused, as I have read numerous posts in threads that say it gets louder as you increase the rpm and boost. I have not experienced this. Mine is more audible in the cab at about 7 LBS turbo pressure. It decreases a bit with higher pressure. I have no problem carrying on conversations while driving. Now you must understand that I liked the sound of the CTD prior to the new HPCR quite ones from 2003 on. I also took my muffler off and used Geno's Muffler Elimination Kit. Unless my truck is side by side with another that has the muffler installed you wouldn't know the muffler has "fallen off. " My two cents worth...

I agree with MMerlino, I get more whisrle at low boost just loafing along. When I got into it with the BHAF it got a ratty air sound that overcame the whisrle.

Same here with my AFE and the B1-2 turbo(hence the turbo name/WWII bombers whistle),kind of gotten accustomed to it:cool::cool::cool:. The mutts like to ride in the back with the canopy on,before when they were in the cab everytime i spooled that bad-boy the one dog went a little squirrely on me. He was probable hearing 100x what i was.:rolleyes:DW

I took the silencer ring out of my stock HX35 for one day. Hated the noise, put it right back in. I have a TAG, that seems to reduce turbo noise slightly. It's about a break even after installing a BHAF. The BAHF makes more of a rumble than a whine to my ears, which is good. I really don't like the high frequency sounds. The stock air box is quiter and cooler than any open element. If you really want turbo noise, get a Scotty II air intake. It draws cooler air through the cowl after you cut a big hole for it. That really puts the turbo in your face, your passenger's face anyway. From what I understand, the AFEs are pretty whiny. I hear the most whistle right around 12psi. Every truck and turbo/intake configuration will be different sound-wise. But I don't have to look at the gauge to know when I hit 12psi. Just don't go thinking your truck is going to sound like a Kenworth.

There is not a Turbo thats gonna whistle@ Idle... no chance...

In my signature you will see what I have, and I hear that the Dodgezilla is the Loudest, I want LOUDER!!! do I have to go with Twins???

Or have to buy a PowerJoke and hear the Jet engine sound from the exhaust @ idle and a Piccolo pete when the GoPeddal is Mashed...

Hehehe...

my buddy's deuce whistles so loud at idle you can't really talk over it! but no, not on these trucks...

if you leave the silencer ring in on your HY, I don't think any air filter setup will cause it to be too loud.

as for wanting louder, a good size turbo hung under the Dodgezilla will help. Is yours a 6 blade wheel? that thing SCREAMS in the 15-20psi range.

about my favorite sound out of these trucks is the 71mm turbine wheel they're using on the S300 hybrids through straight exhaust... love it

Ok next question. What makes one louder than another? Always wondered why some trucks scream and others don't. There is Furd about 60yds away from my house and his is whistling at idle, I can hear it that far away. When he hits the pedal it is unbelievable and I have heard other Furds that are the same way.

I am planning on adding Mach 2's and a Smarty next year, would a 35/40 14cm housing be ok with that?

your neighbor's ford has a variable vain turbo, so it spools instantly and turns very high RPM at idle...

beyond that it boils down to the various wheel design parameters... blade count, pitch, diameter, and RPM

you'll probably want more turbo than that with a smarty and injectors
