I have an 08 4500. About 2 wks ago it starting having a whistling noise when I would turn exhaust brake on whick still does, and now a slightly lower whistling noise at idle.

Look at the exhaust manifold to EGR cooler connection at the rear of the engine. Look for black soot tracking at the cooler flange. They sometimes loosen up the nuts and the gasket blows out. Otherwise look at all exhaust manifold runners and the turbo mounting flange.

Check and see if your exhaust sounds like a jet (a roaring sound) and goes away if you turn your exhaust brake off. If it does I would say it is normal, mine has been doing that for several hundred thousand miles. I usually turn my exhaust brake off when it is cold and I'm warming the truck up. I can't hear the whistle you're talking about but it drives my wife crazy. I think some of them just whistle like that and I wouldn't worry about it.

Yes it does stop if I turn EB off, it never has done that before so I was thinking maybe something was going bad. No change in performance, just the whistling is agro! Lol.

I Got the same time going on with mine and my fuel mileage is horrible. I checked every thing from the Charge Air Cooler hoses to the egr connections and can't fine anything. I'm thinking it is from the butterfly valve or the throttle valve. Mine is with the EB on and with high engine RPMS that is where my whistling happens.

I plan to bring mine in to dealer just to make sure. It only does it at idle, but is considerably loud. Cant find any EH leaks, or anything either.

Completely normal. Depending on how cold it is outside, the ECM will idle up, turn on the exhaust brake, etc. . The whistle is the exhaust brake working, completely normal.

Well, just got word from dealer that turbo needs to be changed. Also my crankcase filter for emissions?? which is located under valve cover had to be changed also (I didnt know one exsisted under there). So, whistling noise is finally solved, should get truck back in morning.

Did that fix the whistling problem when you picked it up from the dealer. I am having the same issues now, and my turbo was already changed out last year.

As for the whistle, many said it is normal, well it is also normal. my 2011 did not whistle untill I did the full deletes using H&S performance minimax using turbo tune on mild setting. Now that it is getting cooler outside in the mornings, I can set the cruise, idle it up and push EB and yes quiet a whistle. also can see the exhaust temp. go up dramaticly. But if its warm outside my EB won't engage when parked.
