Opinion of Montana Fiver

On my way thru Nebraska in Feb. while towing my 28' TT loaded I hit black ice and ended up turning my steering wheel 6 times 90 degrees right to left from center total of 180 degrees. All of sudden there were semis, passenger cars and vans rolled and ditched everywhere. I quess blind luck worked in my favor and I managed to stay on track. It could of gone the other way just as easy. Some of those trucks never slowed down. I've been on black ice once before and it is some scary S**t. Especialy with the TT.

Old trucker trick, keep a gallon or two of Clorox in the rig. If you run into black ice and absolutly have to get into the next town pull over and pour over the tires. It will give you enough traction(softens rubber) to get to the next town. Do not however pour it on and run down dry highway. It will put some undo wear on your tires. When temps drop and fog hits, keep an eye on road color and surrounding vegetation. Or pull over and check road surface. I stepped out of my rig one time and fell on my butt. I had been driving on ice for awhile. Luckily I didn't need to stop quick.

Was glad to see the clorox bleach info. My grandpa and my parents have done that for years. Grandpa said a guy who owned a private ambulance service used bleach on his tires to get people to the hospital when there was ice on the roads. I'd tell people that and they would look at me like I'm crazy. It works. Thanks for the validation.

Walter, sounds like your driving skills were up to par,I bet you was glad to get thru that one #ad

Another trick to do when getting squirly on the slick stuff is to strech the rig out by gently putting a little brake on the trailer, but not the truck, in WYO in the winter this has helped me out many many times. Kevin

Another old trick. Gotta window in your car that fogs all the time?Take a raw onion slice it in half, put in in a old dishcloth and rub it on your window. In most cases it will stop the fog.
