After reading that post again I thought I'd take a cut at the psychic hot lines responses/predictions or whatever they are called. Mr. Gooch's assumptions are in quotations.
"I know which one will pull slower for 400K. "
Ford on the uphill and Cummins on the down. So when do you want the speed?
"I know which one will need an injection pump at 400K. "
Psychic. I missed this one. Which one is this? Ford uses the high pressure oil pump (required for the HEUI system) that has had some problems and I thought both used the Bosch fuel pumps.
"I know which one is quieter and smoother. "
Chevy
"I know which one has a flatter power/torque curve. "
ETH Cummins
"I know which transmission and transfer case, and truck will die first. "
Another psychic. The roofing contractor that did my house at the end of last year has a 2001, PSD F-350 that had the rear axle replaced at week three and the transmission at week 5 of his proud ownership. He's got me here. Which manufacturer is it? I think all three have problems in that area. I've read of Dodge problems on this site and Ford problems on the Ford site and Chevy problems on the Chevy site. By the way, check the latest J. D. Powers "still on the road" survey. The point, Mr. Gooch (assuming that is your real name)?
"I know which motor company puts their diesel in a truck with a 30,000 lb GVWR. "
Must be the Ford. Georgia Ports Authority uses the Cummins B5. 9 in the yard trucks that move up to 80,000 lbs NET wait throughout the port area every day. Yeah... . the vehicle is rated for it.
"I know 5 is bigger than 4 , but 5 X 6 (cyl) = 30, and 4 X 8 (cyl) = 32. So sometimes size doesn't matter. Fewer may need to be bigger, and more might be ok smaller. "
What's this one about? We talking displacement or something. Uhhhhhh. Yeah the PSD has more displacement. And put it in perspective... . the higher displacement, more cylinder PSD produces about the same horsepower as the lowely 6 cylinder Cummins. And where does the PSD stand with respect to the Duramax?
Let me add a couple to the list:
I know which one will crank on those days when it's so cold that the tidy bowl man can skate in the tank.
CUMMINS
I know which one will have the most entries in the Classified section called "Trucks for Sale".
Check your paper Mr. Gooch.
I know which one has the turbo bolts fall out.
I know which one will have to have the high pressure oil pump replaced.
I know which one Cackles, cavitates, uses a dual mass flywheel, has glowplugs... ... .
Now with all that said, I'll say this. I like the PSD. I like the Cummins. Both are good engines in good trucks. Both have had problems. Both can be driven and touted by a$$es. Don't you agree, Mr. Gooch?
