White Smoke and Rough Running

Truck has been fine up to now, 17500 miles. Last three mornings have had long crank and a very rough idle. This morning ha a rough start, ran very badly. Moved the truck in the yard with a little throttle and got a lot of white smoke.



Shut off and re-started. Very rough idle, then it smoothed out. Fine for rest of the day with several starts and stops. Threw code 301, cyliner #1 misfire.



Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. If i have a bad injector why would it 'cure' itself?

I agree, possibly a leaking injector. Mine started the same thing about 7,500 miles and got worse. Once it was warmed up, it started and idled fine. Only after it sat for 8+ hours or overnight did it act like that. Mine got worse until finally convinced the dealer that something was wrong. They verified the cold engine start problem and Star told the to remove the exhaust manifold, let the truck sit overnight and then when started see which cylinder(s) had the white smoke. Mine was #6 injector leaking. They replaced it and I have not a problem since, at 27,000 miles now.

I'm sure it's injectors. Let it sit for a few days and start it and you'll see much more white smoke. Don't be surprised if you have more than one bad injector. Too late now,. . but once you get them fixed be sure your using some good cleaner like Power Service or Stanadyne.

There is a new TSB that gives the technician a very detailed procedure to follow to find missing and smoke problems. It they follow it they should have no trouble finding the problem. The TSB also states that white smoke and a rough idle for less than one minute on a cold start is normal, especially at cold ambients and altitude.

I've had the rough idle in cold weather but it is warm here these days and I've never had it do this before.



OT-OF-HERE and JVolpe, it is doing exactly as you say, the longer it sits the worse it is. That is why at first I thought I had an air leak.



Sag2 thanks for the info. Well, it's under warranty so time to make an appointment. I do run Stanadyne but mostly in the winter and infrequently in the summer.



I take it that running a high dose of Stanadyne now won't 'clean' the injector, will it?

Sag - Thanks for the info. I have really noticed the white smoke lately since the weather has warmed up (this only happens upon the first start of the day). I was thinking that the heater grids were not coming on because the outside air has been so warm, which is why I am getting the white smoke? Does that make any sense and could that be the problem? Other than the white smoke on a cold start and a rough idle for about 30 seconds, the truck runs great. Could I still have a bad injector(s) and still have it run so good?

White smoke and bad injectors

Over about a two month period I ended up having my truck for maybe a week or week and a half. The rest of the time I kept taking it back to the dealer for this condition. I ended up having 7 injectors changed out,. . yes,... one of the replacements were bad also. One member posted a year or so ago the part number on the injectors and there was a number or alpha character associated with the part number that indicated that it was a rebuilt injector. All mine were rebuilds. Maybe it was an "R" following the number,. . can't recall for sure. Anyway the good news is I use injector cleaner religiously and next month marks a year since I had a problem with the white smoke. I will tell you that it will only get worse. Be persistant and stay on that dealers A. . !!
