Earlier this week I went to start my truck for the first time that day and the engine idled rough and I had a lot of white smoke. It slowly cleared up over the next 5 minutes and was fine the rest of the day. It has now done this for the last 4 days. The never would never smoke except on cold winter days prior to this and never this amount of smoke. The only thing I done was I used some diesel additive about 3 weeks ago and and I changed the fuel filter about 1 month ago. The eng is stock, no mods. I get a code of 500 and 1693, but i haven't figured these out yet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You have a lot of help up there in Wa. If I were to make a guess it would be an injector. Give the make, model, mods & stuff and help will follow. Good luck, Mike

While I do not have the stuff to test your pump, I would like to say Hello 'cause we're neighbors. I live just North of Machias.

Well it's a 2001 2500 QC and no mods are installed. I have recently started buying gauges to install, however I don't have the fuel pressure gauge yet. The only codes I had were 500 and the 1693. I was also having a problem with a dead pedal. Just as the smoke clears up, so does my dead pdeal problem. I had read the restting the APPS might help with the dead pedal so i tried that, no change other than it cleared the 500 code. I still have a 1693 code but thats it. Thanks for the help also.

ImustangI. I still have a 1693 code but thats it. Thanks for the help also. [/QUOTE said:
The 1693 will come up with other codes you need a scanner to check others. BTW I have a FP guage if needed. If still in warranty GET TO DEALER NOW. Sounds like VP44 going going gone.

Update

Well ,i just used a ODB2 scanner and received the dreaded P0216 code. Fortunately if I let the engine idle for 5-10 min first thing in the morning, the engine will run fine the rest of the day and it'll buy me enough time to get it replacement pump. Is there anything I should know before I get a new VP-44? Thanks for all of your help.

Update

Well, I took the truck to the dealer today and after they ran their diagnostics, they tell me that the lift pump is failing. They are replacing that now and will test again.

question

OK they are replacing the lift pump for me since its still under warranty, however should I be concerned about possible damage to the VP-44?

Problem not fully fixed

Well I got the truck back Wed afternoon and everything appeared to run fine. However, both Thur morning and this morning I noticed that all the symptons were still there, just not as bad as before. I suspect the faulty lift pump has caused the VP-44 begin failing. I've already called the dealer and I'm taking the truck back next Thurs. I have to say I'm not completely suprised they are trying to find something else wrong other than the VP-44.

The dealerships know this is a high failure item, why can't they just get it through their head to make a better one and replace them.

Perhaps driving with the LP plug disconnected for a week or so would help the dealer diagnose the problem ;) (For diagnostic purposes only :D )

Your clock is ticking and midnight is approaching. Get to Autozone and see if the 0216 is back.

I had similar symptoms but without any codes. Read about it HERE. It was alluded to by others here that Dodge will not change out an injection pump with out the correct code telling of failure. I may be wrong on that. The dealer kinda' led me on with other cash work (valve adjust, injector clean... ) I am not dealing with them anymore and am looking at trading it in.

Hopefully you will get a new pump.
