I have a 98 12 valve w/a 5 speed that has a 20 over motor w/marine 370 injectors, fuel plate,ATS arc flow intake,Afe air intake etc. that when the motor is still some what cold it likes to back fire thru the exhaust and emit white smoke! Any ideas on what to look for would be greatfully useful. Thanks S. Phillips

i vote check the timing, mine would fart and smoke and generally run like crap till i got some heat in the engine when i first got it and after i set the timing it got happy (t'was around 4* retarded from stock, kinda like the previous owner) maybe in the cold it will complain if i try to stand on it for the first shift after backing out of the driveway but after that it is good ta go

i thought of the timing also but he has the p pump and i have never seen one get out of time. the valve lash could be off like stated but i still think a injector is poping off at to low a pressure like a broke spring

mine was due to the idiot that swapped injection pumps at the lot i got the truck from chasing air leaks, a gutless OF valve and half dead lift pump not getting it in the correct position, i just thank god he put a 215 hp pump back on the truck as one of the other disservices he did was to put some half dead 160 hp injectors in it chasing the cold start issue that was all of that other crap being wrong that he changed the pump for

Thanks to ALL that responded to my write up. It was do to injection pump timing being to retarded, we advanced it and what a world of difference it made in the way the truck runs. But sad to say in the near future I personal am going to insall a 1968 F-100 body that I have fully custimized. It was my first truck and will always be my baby. Stay tuned for what yet is to come!
