Well, on my way home today, the ol dodge decided to start to kick, sputter, and cough out white smoke at around sixty mph. My only thought is head gasket. Any other ideas? She's only got 80,000 miles. only mods are 275 injectors. any thoughts? What are my options if it is the head gasket? How about the o ring route? help me please!?!

well, that would make more sense considering the mileage is so low. I guess it makes me wonder why a guy would get white smoke from low fuel pressure. Also, my truck is idleing fine and running normal till that specific speed with my foot in it. now that I think of it, I changed the fuel filter about a week ago. Could this be related? Thanks for your input;)

Well unfortunately, 80k miles is a lot for the fuel system problems on the 24valve. I've only got 56k miles and have replaced 2 lift pumps and am currently waiting on an injection pump.

Did you have a hard time getting the fuel system reprimed after you changed the fuel filter? If you did, I would suspect the lift pump. If not, it could be several things. The fact that you said it only did it at 60ish is not what I experienced. My truck just flat out died, cause it couldn't pull enough fuel through the lift pump.

Have you checked the air filter? It could be a lot of things. Do a search on it, you will find a lot of info. Hopefully someone else with more knowledge will jump in here.

well, here is the update, last night after work I dicided to check that lift pump. it was getting power, but not pumping, so I replaced it with new. Now, I have decent power to around 65, then she just looses power, this is frustrating. is it possible I burned up the injecter pump? How does one test that bad boy? Thanks for all the help guys

Abe:

Try doing the basic diag thru the ignition key sequence. Turn your ignition from OFF to ON (not start), three times, and on the third time, leave it on. Your odometer or check engine light will flash a certain number of times, and that should give you some kind of fault code. I believe a 5 and another 5 is a no code thrown. There is a list of codes in the top of this forum. Otherwise, an ODB scanner would be the best bet. JiffyLube or a reputable mechanic should have one of those...

Since you didnt have a fuel gauge to see your LP failing, theres no telling how long it has been pumping too little fuel. The injection pump you have is lubed by fuel, so too little fuel== toasty pump... If you have only 80k, I`d consult the dealer about the 100k warranty. Tho I wouldnt recommend a stock LP replacement. Get the updated unit thru cummins, it pumps 17-18psi constant... the more the merrier...

good luck

still at it... I tried the sequence with key on key off and get nothing. I do have a scanner at work but will have to wait till tommorow to scan it. When I changed the fuel filter a week ago, had no trouble priming it so the lift pump wasn't out long. I am in the process of negotiating a warranty deal with cummins. The 100k warranty is only good for five years. My truck is a 99'. The first guy I talked to said get lost. After getting past him, I got another gentlemen who was much more inclined to help. We'll see if he pulls through. Thanks for the help, let me know if anyone has any more ideas.

alright, I scanned my truck as soon as I got off work. Here is what I got.

P0382

Intake Air Heater Relay No. 2 Control Circuit

Could this actually affect the truck when warm? doing sixty five with my foot in it? I understand that the intake heater shuts off after the truck reaches twenty. is it not shutting off maybe?

I am out of ideas, I have tried everything but switching out the injectors for my other ones. 20,000 members and not one person has any ideas? Tonight it got worse, I can floor it, and after sixty she spits, sputters, and just has no power. it takes about five miles just to get past 70. Lift pump is putting out good pressure and lots of volume. Air filter is fine. I just don't get it, how can it run so ****ty, and not even though a code or check engine light? I drive around with the scanner in the truck now. I watch the throttle position, load, everything. Not one thing is out of wack. All I can find is the damn po382. In my opinion, it's not even related. I guess my little suzuki will have to be my new wheels, its the only thing around here that will even run right... help me please? :(

I would love to check the vp. As soon as I figure out how. I will let ya know the results. Any input greatly appreciated. One thought though, when vp's start going out, Don't people ussually get check engine lights and obd codes? Maybe I got a rouge truck, eh? Thanks for the help, abe

sounds to me like the blankety blank things pump is either barely able to put out enough fuel pressure to pop off the injectors or the timing is off. I wonder since you have a code if it is telling the pump to alter timing?

Mine also took a dump with out any codes, one day it just would not start unless I pull started it, also would not idle smoothly and would die on zero throttle launches. Could be your vp.

well, I'm not quite sure how to test the vp, but at idle I crack the injector lines loose and I get alot of fuel comeing out. Is there any other way to test it? How can I check the pump timing also? Thanks again for all the help... ;)

well, out of bordom I decided to put my factory injectors back in tonight. same problem. I can hardly even accelerate anymore. she just shakes, sputters and all that good stuff. GRRRRR Just thought I'd let everyone know, It must not be an injector LOL.

To end this post, I killed my vp44. It is dead and that was the problem. To everyone that has read this far, GET GAUGES, GET GAUGES, GET GAUGES. By delaying my gauges it only cost me a grand. ONLY, :--)

Why is your wwarrentyly 5 years 100000miles, and not 7 years and 100000miles on the engine? What kind of guages should I put on my 2004. 5 3500? tks Silverram

i have a 01 and mine started smoking (white) really bad sputtering and died it restarted ran like **#$ and was rolling out the white smoke it ended up being the camshaft sensor. if that might be any help
