White Smoke with Low Temperatures

Thanks for addressing blue smoke in particular. I was beginning to wonder. I appreciate your help.

There's a post detailing how to find the TDC via a fixed-stop method. That is the best way I know of to do it.

That's how I did it at Wentland Diesel. It works well, and produces quite accurate results.

Because, unless it's an extreme cold condition, there should NOT be white smoke, and then only if the engine misfires, even when it is extremely cold. As to blue, yes, the blue smoke happens when it's cold out, but that should quit as soon as the engine manages to "work" a little and get the cylinders warmed up.

I had noticed blue smoke on startup quite some time ago. Put in larger injectors, blue smoke is a bit more noticable. More fuel, more smoke, go figure.

Wow! I'm amazed at the vast amount of knowledge out there and the willingness of those who have it with those of us who don't. Since my original post I've been watching my baby real closely and Think I can attribute my white smoke to the extremely cold temperature we've experienced the last several days. Yesterday things had warmed up a little (above freezing) and upon startup - No white smoke. I think the best advice is to leave the Bad Boy plugged in for a longer period of time. A reaally appreciate all of the replys. Thank You.

Actualll to a lot of people it does look like white smoke and it is normal regardless of what some think blue white whatever you want to see and it will occur anytime that the diesel does not burn the fuel and that is normal when the combustion chamber is too cold like I said earlier it never was a timing issue. ALL mechanical cummins will smoke when it is cold and you are not plugged in that is unless you take your mirrors off.
