I have a small amount of white smoke on startup for about 1 min or so, temps are anywhere from 60-80 deg. Is any white smoke permissible on startup for healthy injectors? Milage isn't that bad depending on how i drive, 19 or so keeping my foot out of it to 15 on it(80 mi. commute). And I can't tell if it's running any rougher than normal, also oil level is OK. This is my first diesel but I've been driving fire engines/rescues for years and never seen white smoke, just black. :D

You might need to have the 034 reflash done on your truck. Mine was giving some white smoke but not above 60. The reflash took care of it (and increased the mileage).

I am still getting white smoke at startup. I had the 18-037-04 Flash done 9-29-04 to correct this and I noticed the other day that when cold I still have this occuring. I will call to get another appointment to have them check to make sure it was done correctly.

I also had the door seals replaced in Dec. and the door seal is bad already.

Good luck. Have a great day.

Are you sure you are seeing "white smoke" as in unburned fuel, verses steam? I too see some white stuff from the tailpipe, but it is just water that condenses in the exhaust system overnight. "White smoke" has a distinctive odor of unburned fuel. I bet all you're seeing is water vapor.

Well now I'm not sure. You could be right, but I have an appointment on the 25th and I should know then if the first flash was done right and it is like you say just water vapor. There is a terrible smell in my garage from it though?? My 96 didn't put out any smoke when I started it. Have a great day.

Speaking of smoke. I have a 03. 5 555 completely stock. If I put my foot in it I see all kinds of white smoke (it isn't black). Is this common with the 555? I read on here about alot of guys that can't get their trucks to smoke. So do the 3rd gens smoke or not?

No I don't think it's water vapor as it does have more of a diesel smell when first started. It does not dissipate like vapor it's definitely smoke. Do you guy's think I have an injector leaking down? What does the test for this consist of? Thanks.

Just an update on my symptoms. I just started the truck for the first time today 63 deg. and got white smoke for about 3 min. Definitely smoke with a diesel smell like an older powerstroke if you know what that is like. Not really running rough but might sound a little different.

I am haveing the same probleml, I am getting a white smoke on start up in the morning. I am haveing the dealer reflash the truck because I am also getting bad fuel milage.

My truck did this the other day, except I have a SO. Freaked me out. Last time I saw white smoke there was fuel pouring out the exhaust. Yea, bad situation. I let the wait to start light go out. Then backed the key out. Then back on, cycling through the wait to start light twice and it got rid of it. Hasn't done it since.

I thought it was for 12/10/03 and newer engine build dates also? I have a 3/03 Engine build date and have always had white smoke of the first 10 minutes or so when the outside temp is below 40*. Actually did a post on it when I first got the truck, but I haven't noticed any ill effects so far... My mileage has been better than my 01, and for a Dually long bed versus the 2500 Short bed, I was pretty happy to have better mileage!

Do you mean you think your 3/03? That the TSB applys? If so I think you may be wrong. I call a 3/03 a EARLY/older build date. To me a NEWER biuld date is like 04/04 etc. I read the TSB. Its only 04 or 04. 5 build dates. After the D. C. software was dropped and the Cummins software is used. I could be wrong but I thought thats what I read. Mines a 02/03 build date and I thought from reading the TSB that it had nothing to do with that year model or build date. Only later model trucks. Much later. For 03 models only reflashes I saw was for gauges/ac something or another and that was about it.

That is what I thought also. The TSB doesn't apply to my 03... But I do think that the 3rd gens do white smoke some in the cold at start up. At least mine has always done it.

I think in cold its normal. I think the TSB is for abnormal amounts of smoke in moderate to warm temps. At lest thats the impression I get. Like 70 degrees and on startup lots of smoke etc. Not 20 degrees. It was 32 when I stared mine this A. M. and no smoke to speak of. The other daty at 22 degrees it smoked but not anything horrible.
