White smoke, whats this mean?????

Just got done at the dealership 2 days ago, got a new lift pump and they said the VP44 was fine (p0216 code the reason I took it in) Fine for a day then today I got in to go to the dealership to have the codes cleared to be sure the p0216 code I was still getting was wrong. Truck was still warm, not at operating temp. , but warm, put it in 2nd clutch fully engaged... . sputtered for a second then a cloud of white smoke out the tail pipe, again turning out onto the road, same thing but in 3rd. After that didn't do it again in the 2 miles to the dealership. Any ideas?????

78,000 mi.

I'm going to agree with RJ. I know it's hard to accept but you just lost your VP I think. May it rest in peace! On the next one get a fuel press gauge. P0216 is, Injection Pump Timing Failure, I believe. Good luck. Hope all goes well.

That's what I figured, my gauges are going to arrive tomorrow 3/24 but I won't have a truck to put them in until the 25th. EZ arrived today too, what a horrible time for this to happen.

Oh well, thank God for warranties.

Good thing it's under warranty. When it's fixed you're going to love it. White smoke like that is a classic sign of a dead VP. Good luck. Let us know how things go.

Eric

Well, I just got a call from the dealership saying that there is nothing wrong with the VP. He said that it is normal for it to give off a little white smoke when the motor is cold, but the motor was not cold when it happened, it was at about 100 deg. according to the gauge.

Is it just me or does it sound like the dealership is jerking me around until it is really broken and I have to be towed to their service garage.

I'm confused.

It sounds like the dealership is just jerking your chain. I don't know what else it could be if it's not the VP. I willing to bet that it is though. I guess they want you to have to tow it in. Does the engine studder and stumble when it blows the white smoke? If so thats another sign of the VP failing. Good luck.

Yeah, it sputters, stumbles, and falls on its face like a sloppy drunk for about a second then comes back to life when it gets above 1500 rpm or so and the smoke pours out. Its only done it twice, but seems fine otherwise. I think I'll recalibrate my APPS tomorrow morning just for the fun of it.

Maybe I'll get lucky.

He said their tech reset the codes and said that the p0216 code started "267 starts ago" I don't think I've even started it that many times since I've owned it. Oh well, I guess its just a matter of time until I get to say "HA, TOLD YOU SO, now pay the driver of this rollback. " Maybe the EZ I'll be installing tomorrow will speed up the process so I won't have to worry about it when we go to Rod Run in Tennessee.

Thanks for your help,

-R. J.

You have a dead/dying VP44. That dealer is just blowing smoke, probably because they don't want to get burned by D/C on the warranty reimbursement. If I were you, I would find another dealer.

The p0216 is a static timing pump error, an almost guaranteed failure of the VP44.

Excellent, just what I wanted. Oh well, is there any way to tell how long I have before it totally quits on me? Or will it?

I got stuff to tow this weekend and I don't need to be stuck on the side of the road.

There is no knowing of how long that VP44 will run before it just quits. The dead pedal and smoking will only get worse with time. If you want to try and accelerate the problem, load the truck and run it up some big hills.

Hopfully it will not leave you stranded.

I'm waiting for my MAP adapter for my EZ (2001 EZ for a 2002) should be here tomorrow, I'm going to be pulling an 32' flatbed car hauler this weekend with 2 cars on it for about 100 miles. I hope the EZ and weight together will smoke it a little quicker before we go on our road trip. Don't wanna be stranded though.

Will a RASP or FASS system pretty much make a VP44 last forever, because I want something that will provide more fuel and help preserve the life of the VP once the warranty is up.

Which one is best, in your opinion, and what do they cost???

Thanks again.

Why would anybody put in a EZ box on a dying VP, and thereby voiding the warranty?? Why not leave it alone and take it to another dealer nearby that can actually use their scantool and do the proper fix?

But this is just me :)
