Front band/2nd gear anchor!!!

Get a new one, drop the pan and look forward of the VB.

The adjuster is external, above the shift mechanism.

Yes you can change it in the truck. Hopefully the band itself is ok.

And yes to your second question too. It has no second gear because of this.

I assume I have to drop the whole valve body assembly ?

never dug this deep into a automatic trans. .

any gotchas to watch out for ?

Here is a picture of the band with the strut and anchor in place. This is after the valve body is removed. More than likely if the anchor has fallen off, then the strut has also. If you can manage to get the strut back on the band with the v/b in the way, i never could and always had to drop the v/b. Plus, you can get a lot better look and what shape the band is really in.

Good luck,

Dave

replace the strut, part number 2 in the pic. most likely it is bent and will do this again if you reuse it. there is a guy on ebay selling reinforced band struts. i have seen several bent ones on cummins trucks and never had a problem after replacing it with a reinforced strut.

its apart

after dropping the VB this is what I see...

does not look like there is any damage that I can see
I have examined every part of the band that I can access

is this the correct upgrade band strut:
eBay Motors: 727, A518, A618, 46RE, 47RE, 48RE Hardened Band Strut (item 8058728619 end time Apr-09-08 11:10:21 PDT)

and cant I buy the strut anchor at the dealer or will it be a special order thing ?

now that I think about it. . maybe I was not having a 1-2 shift problem after all...
I had no 2nd gear at all, and the delayed shift was 1st to 3rd. .
is that possible ?

thanks to all on this forum for all the help !

I would never have dug this far into this thing, without the benefit of the knowledge of the people on this forum

get bent

band strut is bent for sure. .

so this much bend, would cause the breakage of the anchor. .

replacement parts

thanks for the link. .

Billet Strut and Anchor
1994-07
Part No. 618-BSK
Price: $48. 00

I will be ordering this tomorrow . .

We stock these parts. . To adjust the 2nd band torque to 72 in lbs. then back off 2 turns and lock down the 3/4 lock nut.

When we rebuilt Dieseldoods truck we found the exact same part in his pan. Took Dave Goerend 10 minutes to fix it up. It was missing 2nd gear totally because of this.

I ordered the parts this morning

so the installation procedure is to loosen the adjuster bolt,
put the new parts in, and tighten band as opoole recommends?

"To adjust the 2nd band torque to 72 in lbs. then back off 2 turns and lock down the 3/4 lock nut. "

working !

got the parts, installed,

put everything back together

truck is running ( and shifting ) fine . .

thanks again to everyone on this forum for their help !
