who do you guys talk to when you call frito lay about their fleet trucks?just a mechanic or what?how do they sell them?waiting list?sorry 4 dumb question just trying to get informed before i call.

I talked to a random bread truck driver today, got his boss' number, but haven't called yet. I've called quite a few different hubs with conflicting stories. One guy told me his branch was getting a dozen or so trucks(so they could retire some), called the garage and they told me they were several trucks short. :( Just gotta keep trying till I find the right guy.

I'm probably gonna go to Neosho to get mine, as that appears to be the closest place to home at the moment.

There's gotta be a source for these things right here in Michigan though! Its just a not-so-simple matter of locating it. :(

I bought mine through Ebay from "cindythings".

That guy has been selling Frito vans & 4BT's for a long time & so I had a long chat with him. He claims that he has the contract for California & is obligated to buy every van that is retired regardless of condition at a set price. He wouldn't tell me the price but I got the impression that it was around $1500/van & since they are solid aluminum... they're probably worth $1000 in scrap aluminum never mind the 4BT's. He says he's never gotten one that didn't run as they all get maintained properly & safety inspected every year.

He said they bid on the contract every year on a per van basis.

Truth? I can't say... that's just what he told me.

He sells a complete van for $3000 or less & when you subtract the aluminum & consider they come with everything you need to convert your truck... right down to the hydroboost brakes... they're a pretty good buy.

I was planning a 4x4 application so I bought an NP205 transfer case & adapter that bolts directly to the TH400 GM transmission. Some of them have the SM465 & you can adapt the same transfer case. Both transmissions are pretty solid behind a 4BT... no worse than their Dodge counterparts I'd say.

Well maintained. . HA HA HA HA HA roflmao!!!! I personally know a dolly madison mechanic 2 bays over from my shop. You would not believe what those drivers do to those trucks. He deals with 4bt and 6. 5 chevy all the time as well as various gassers. Interestingly, no powerstrokes. Anyhow, they have drivers keep going with zero oil pressure, no antifreeze, gas in tank, flat tires, etc, etc, etc. Ive seen three brand new 6. 5 replaces at less than 10k cause blown radiator hose and driver wanted to finish route before he turned the truck in.

That being said, he has fewer 4bt problems but I think its more because they have fewer 4bt than 6. 5 on the road. They also run older trucks and replace engines as needed.

Cummins and all engine manufacturers that sell to fleets, engineer these engines for that kind of idiot driver abuse. Thats why you don't see too many 600hp C-16's or Sig series in company trucks. Especially the Cummins, you pretty much can throw all you can to it and it will keep going.
