Greetings,

I am a new TDR member and new CTD owner. I have purchased a 92 w250 CC, Getrag.

I am not happy with the mileage. I will be in the Denver area as soon as I get my Getrag rebuilt and would like to find someone there who I can trust to address the KDP issue and check and tweak my pump. I have tried to do everything right with the best parts on this truck but have not seen towing mileage close to what others are claiming - about 10 pulling a 7000 pound travel trailer. Also, the truck will not hold fifth gear with the trailer unless the conditions are unchallenging. One side note - the temp guage does not rise much even though I have it floored for extended periods with a load on it. I thought it would rise more than a few needles widths.

Any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated - also, are there any other deadly issues such as the KDP that must be addressed on my truck?

Thank you,

Brennan R. Cook

I know it is a little outside of Denver, but they seem to know their stuff. At least my "Run, dont walk, out the door" alarm didnt go off when talking to them. THey dont rely on the timing pin to find TDC when doing timing, and will advance it to whatever you request. I'd recommend 1. 5- 1. 55 mm, though I've never had anything timed that accurately- I still use the 1/8" cheat. They might not be familiar with the KDP, but it wouldnt hurt to ask.

Check valve adjustment. That will make for low power, sucking fuel, and all around unpleasant as a V8 to drive. Needs done every 30-40K or so.

The water temp guage will never rise. Or not until you are pulling 10K up 285 out of Parker to Bailey (6-8%); then it will get a little right of center. Sounds like you have either a fuel or timing problem. How many miles are on your pickup? Check your air filter, fuel filter, lift pump weep hole, turbo for leaks, slop in the shaft. A hair of movement up and down is normal, but end to end is not. Your VE could be going south, but I wouldnt get alarmed just yet. Mine has 260K on it, I know a guy around here that has 600+. Get your guages in it ASAP and report back with readings. That will tell us more than anything else. EGT (in manifold, where it belongs at 6000-10000 ft) should be less than 1100*; boost peak at about 15-16 psi/ <5 psi at cruise, if all is stock. High EGT with low boost will indicate air restriction or timing problem; low boost and EGT is lack of fuel; High boost, low EGT is good, but hardly seen. FWIW, I got 13-16 pulling a 24x8 box trailer, loaded to 8-10K for a moving company in Loveland with a stock auto, stock engine, and 3. 54s. Went up and down I25, passed PSDs and every gasser I wanted to. What kind of mpgs do you get empty? You shouldnt get less than about 18-20 unless you tromp it off every line in town or go 90+ down the highway.

Wish I was still out there, I'd come up and give you a hand.

Welcome to the TDR- I have learned more about these trucks here than I could have from 20 mechanics. Great info, great people.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the input. My guages came in today but the truck is still in the trans shop. My empty mileage is about 18 to 19 cruising the highway at 75. I like that after driving a small block one ton. The valves were set right after I got the truck along with a complete once over of everything else I could think of. As you mentioned, once I get some guages in it I will know a lot more. I will post some numbers as soon as I get them.

thanks again

I would look into the set up of your trailer then. If it is lower riding, with small tires, it will create extra drag behind your truck. I have a friend who has a 18ft car hauler trailer that pulls about the same as a 30ft tandem dual gooseneck, at least when you get to cruising speed- same EGT and boost pressure. Only thing I can figure is the smaller tires of the smaller trailer create more drag due to the more rpm they have to turn. You may just need to get a bigger trailer. Or your pump may need turned up. :D More torque equals better mpg due to decreased downshifting.
