Do you change the oil yourself, have a dodge dealer do it or have someother dealership do it or do you have an oil change shop do it?

Maybe a friend or ?

Let us know how you change your oil.

I change my own oil and filter. In fact, I change others, too. Once I show them how easy it is, and the money they save, they join TDR!

Once, though, I had to use a hammer and screwdriver to chisel/drive the filter loose. Done with some care, this can be very effective. I have broken several filter wrenches trying to get the factory filters off!

I'll be doing my second change this weekend. I let the pan drain over night and took the filter off the next morning and found that I didn't have to use the plastic bag trick, 'cause the filter was only about 2/3rds. full. I know this can happen in less time than over night, but it's just the way I like to do it. I have a great channel lock type of filter wrench I bought at Oak Harbor freight... ?? for about $7. 00. Install and tighten the new filter and put a torque stripe on it along with the date. Takes way too long for some tastes, but nobody is touching this motor for oil changes but me! Besides, I think it's fun, and a good "bonding" experience between me and the Cummins. ;)

I change my own oil, do my own brakes, grease what ever, do as much as possible without getting HHHOOOSSSEEEDDD $65. 00 per hour by some dealership ;) P. S. Bob i did the hammer and screwdriver thing also

The dealership that I bought my truck from (Boradway Dodge in Littleton CO) offers FREE OIL CHANGES FOR LIFE. Not a bad deal for a vehicle that uses 3 gallons per change. They don't even care how often you have them do it. Every 3000 miles is fine with them. I think I just have to keep my eye on them to make sure they are watching the other fluids too.

My wife changes mine, when she's done she signals by banging the wrench on the oil pan. I finish my beer then pull her out by the heels along with the drain pan. Excellent system. ;)

I HAD THE LOCAL SHOP DO IT FOR MY FIRST CHANGE. THEY HAD DONE OTHER WORK FOR ME AND DONE A FINE JOB BUT OIL CHANGE MUST BE TOO TUFF FOR THEM. THEY DIDN'T CHANGE THE FILTER AND OVER FILLED THE OIL. I WILL MAKE TIME TO DO IT MYSELF FROM NOW ON.

If you are not doing it yourself... start! A co-worker went to jiffy or one of those quicky places and the next day when he went to get in his rice-o-matic there was oil all over the garage floor! This dude is a real hothead and when he visited the lube joint he must have blown a gasket cause they called the cops! Luckily all was well with the Nissan, and he just got a lecture while the other cop suggested he be refunded the cost of the oil "change".

Bottom line... KEEP THOSE POTHEADS AWAY FROM THE TRUCK!

Oil changes.

I change my own oil and filter & fuel filter and any thing else i can do at home, dont trust just anybody working on my baby. :p

Lazy

Although a gearhead to the core I have yet to do my own on my dodge. I get the factory filters at wholesale and I used to take it to a lube place a friend of mine ran. I liked getting it vaccuumed and the windows washed inside and out for $40. Now since I hate having to get rid of 3 gallons of oil I take it to the guy who does maintance on all our trucks at work. I used to take other vehicles in to reputable lube shops once or twice a year becuase they check ALL the fluids and fill them for free. If its not my race car I tend to be lazy when it comes to everything behind the motor lol.

Went wheeling last year after a VERY HEAVY RAIN in my toyota. Got alot deeper than I thought. . had two creek crossing that were to the middle of the headlights on my lifted yoda(good door seals on those trucks lol) I took it in to have the oil changed a few days later. Kid pulled the fill plug on the transfer case and got slimed. I guess bieng so far underwater the vents let it fill up. I was stading outside and heard the water hitting the bottom of the pit lol!! Oddly enough nothing else got water in it. Most of the lube places around here aren't to bad... they keep the potheads washing windows

I always change my engine oil and filter and fuel filters by myself, I am trying to keep my truck out of the dealers hands as much as I can. Although the dealer I do take my truck to does very good work and have been very happy so far.

I have this dumba$$ named wayne change my oil. He is really slow, and does a bad job. He gets oil all over the interor. I dont know why I let him touch my truck.

I mentioned this once before about draining the oil overnight. It's the real way to go - but there are some precautions that I learned back in the 50's when my neighbor did this also. During the middle of the night his wife developed an emergency situation that required him to get to the hospital - about 20 miles away, and no ambulance available. He had no oil in their only vehicle, and it was a good thing he had us living near so we could run him there. So while it is unlikly this will happen - be careful and don't block in your other rig - and be if it's your only one - you're gambling as you may need her - when her sump is dry.

When my wife and I were first together she would change the oil in her car. Wouldn't hear of me doin it. Four kids and four grandchildren later, I am the one who does it. I guess the Honeymoon is over:D

With all the factory tighten filter horror stories I've heard, I think my first change (2k now) will be at the dealer. Then I'll gladly do my own. I too have done the screwdriver and hammer thing. It seems a little too harsh on the filter mount.

I'll search on the overnight thing, but the search engine and I have not gotten along very well lately. :( Can someone tell me more about why letting it sit overnight. Why leaving the filter on overnight? A plastic bag? For spillage? Haven't changed a diesel before!

Thanks,

Pat

I bought the Cummins tune up tool kit that another member posted about (thanks that was a great bargain) and in it was a oil filter wrench that works great. it is like the typical strap type wrench with out a handle instead it has a place for a 3/8 drive extension in it so you can get the ratchet up above the filter for great leverage and ease of movement
