I am thinking about a new turbo. Right now I am running a PDR HX35-12 and I can see empty EGT's of 1450 with all the boxes on and higher when I am towing my snowmachines with the boxes on. So I am trying to decide what I want and since I am very happy with my PDR HX35 I need to look into this 40. So here are my questions.

Has anyone gone from a PDRHX35-12 to a PDRHX40?

What were the differences, egt? boost??

Has any one blown up a PDRHX40??

With my mods, DD3's EZ and a PE what housing should I get on a 40?

Add any other comments you have about the turbo too...

Thanks in Advance.

Don_M has or had one, don't know if that's what he is still running or not. He has enough parts to rival the Cummins shop in my neck of the woods. ;) :p:D

Yep, I have the 40 from Piers. So far so good. Drive my truck everyday and have yet to blow her up. The turbo I mean:D

Spool-up is good with the 16 housing that is modified. With the 18, its kinda slow to spool with moderate fuel. I drive around with the little housing and will more likely than not keep that housing on it for the next few weeks. The 18 helps EGT's on the road when really leaning on it, but the 16 is funner to drive.

I cant remember the last time I drove my truck with a stock 35 on it, but the lag is really not any worse than it was with the 35/16 housing. Of course the fuel is turned up a little more now too.

Out of the 40's available I would have to say I really like this one the best. The kwikspool (40 with a 35/12 housing) was a bad idea from its conception.

Dee Rawson has the same turbo as I do. He really likes his too. Maybe he will pop in here and give his opinion as well.

This 40 gets a thumbs up from me. The kwikspool was a three week turbo for me(thumbs down). Another guy on here has the Piers 40 and has dynoed it 26HP over the 35.

Don - I am wondering if it will help my egt's enough to make it worth it $$ wise. I am guessing that with all my boxes on I am just over 400 HP, is this still the okay range for the Piers HX40??

Sure. 16 housing modified and your set. I have no experience with the turbo on an auto truck with a tight TC though.

I've heard Don's truck spool up, I was impressed at quick it was. He was next to me and hammered it and it was gone, and so was my truck in the smoke:D I'm like you in thinking that is the way I will go. Piers says 100-150 EGT loss in the PDR 35 and 250 with the 40. Now would it be better to use the PDR 35 you have and use it for twins... ... BOMBING budget... ... what is it!

I went from a stock HX35/16 to the Super Piers HX-40/16. I left the fueling alone for the first little bit and I lost a hole 50 RPMs in spool up with this great turbo. All I had to do to get that 50 RPMs back is adjust the AFC slightly richer.

It was worth 250+ deg of EGT reduction and by itself it gave me 25 HP. But after fueling it properly the gain with the same EGTs as before is 90+ HP.

I am currently running the waste gate adjust to make 42 PSI of boost but have had it as high as 46.

What ever Piers does to his turbo has made it not only stronger but it spools so much faster than a stock HX-40 it is incredible. I have a good buddy that has a stock HX-40/16 and has about as much fueling as I have and I make boost 200 RPMs fast than he does.

I would highly recomend Piers great HX-40!!!!!!

call Piers

When he returns from may maddness:D

His modified HX40,16w does a GREAT job.

But ... he is working on some new designs also...

all depends on how much $ you want to invest!

;)

I ran my new Piers Hx40 at the drags in Maryland. Like drawson says, it indeed spools much faster than a stock Hx40.

The lag is somewhat there, though, but it really doesn't seem to have any more lag than an Hx35.

Reliability is not really an issue, Piers has addressed that, with the help of Holset engineers. No worries.

This thing hauls, top end is mind blowing. It's fun to beat Corvettes to "holes" in traffic.

Methinks next week I will be making a phone call westward to talk turbo-type stuff with the Man Himself... . mid-July is coming quickly and the HX35 ain't cutting it now-bigger injectors are only gonna make things worse.

Piers hx40

Just installed mine last night with help from Fred Swanson, thanks Fred. I dont have any numbers for you yet, I have to let it break in first about 250 miles and no more than 15 lbs of boost. So far I have noticed a nice drop in EGTS.

MikeR has been running one for awhile as well. I know he likes his a lot. He is putting down quite a bit of power, around 440hp with older style DD2s and TST PMax (I think that is what he is running for mods). He did try a kwikspool but he was barking it constantly. He doesn't have that problem with the PDR. Hopefully he'll see this and chime in.

Yes indeed, I absolutely love this PDR40! The top-end pull is incredible!! Mine has the 16cm housing and I have the 3rd one made and have about 20k miles on it now. With all the high hp trucks running them, no one has been able to blow one up. Piers has definitely solved the problem of the '40.

Low-end spoolup comes in quick at about 1600rpm and just sucks you incredibly fast to 3200rpm. The lag is no different than an HX35 w/14cm housing. It is THAT responsive.

I tried a kwikspool type 40 w/35-14cm housing and that unit was a bomb waiting to happen. It would bark badly on every shift, I could really tell the differences in drive pressures and that it wouldn't live from it. This one is very hard to bark.

I'm sorry I cannot help on your high egt concerns. All I know is that it seems to take more fuel to achieve any high egt's than previous. I've stopped looking at my gauges long ago when I have my foor to the floor.

On the dyno (same one before and after), I gained 26hp from it.
