who has a VW jetta or passat diesel?

How do you like it? Is the power adequate? Service problems? I am afraid to go look at one before being informed. Are they as hard to find as I have been told? Thanks

No Jetta

Don't have the jetta got the NB. You want believe how these engines run to you drive one. MPG best I have got is 52+. From what I have read on Freds TDI http://www.tdiclub.com/ and vw vortex http://www.vwvortex.com/ the golf,nb,jetta are the same car just different body styles same frame, engine, transmission. The golf and jetta get slightly better mpg more aerodynamic. Go drive one I think you will be impressed. And when you can go 700+ on a tank of fuel :D . They got there little quirks but what doesn't. I think they have come out with a better warranty on the 2002.

I do not own a V W TDi, but I was kinda responsible in getting a friend to buy one! What makes it even better is that He went to look with a negative attitude because He had an '80's non turbo rabbit. He wound up with a black jetta automatic. I still haven't been in it yet but I can say it is a real nice little car! If I was in the market for a smart commuter car I would get one! He still tells me about what a difference the turbo, among other things makes. I think my CTD is viewed in a different light as well.

:) The girlfriend has one and she just loves it. She has never taken it to the dealer for anything. It has 36,000 miles and it gets between 46 and 50 mpg.

She says it has enough power for her but if it were mine I would bomb it. It is a five speed.

The automatic door locks are a little harsh and changing the oil is a PITA because you have to take a plastic cover off underneath the engine.

There is nowhere to plug it in. And on a cold night about 5 to 10 below it gelled up. I know I should have put something in the fuel. After some Power Service and time to warm up during the day it fired up and never had another problem

Great car, get one and enjoy.

Last time I looked Diesel Dynamics has a diesel bug for sale. It has a three inch exhaust, DD custom injectors and some gauges... ... . just thought you might like to know...

My wife has one, we love it. Actually though other circumstances are forcing us to sell it. Wouldn't sell it if we didn't really need to. With an automatic we average anywhere from 39 mpg to 45 mpg, depending on how much highway driving. There's only 2 bad things I can think of; timing belt has to be changed at 40,000 miles (on an auto), I upgraded to an 80,000 mile belt, and the CCV bypass goes right into the intake manifold. If not reconfigured this can lead to a plugged intake manifold, and oil filled intercooler. I bypassed it so it vents under the engine, just like the truck. You have to buy a $30 (roughly) resistor to hook into the wiring to keep from getting a CEL. They run good, are fairly quiet and great fuel mileage. I'd highly recommend them.

I have a 2002 Jetta TDI 5 speed as well. My biggest concern before buying was will it have enough power. My wife have taken it on several trips and never had a problem. The only time climbing hills it ever lost speed was on a long 8% grade. It dropped from 67 (cruise set) to 65 and held there. I kicked the cruise off and dropped it down a gear and gained my speed back. Our overall average so far is around 48mpg. All time high was 54. The last 1200 mile trip with a lot of moutain driving gave us a 52mpg average for the trip. I believe we made a very good decision buying this car.

I've test driven a few Jetta 5 speed TDIs.

Thinking about getting one for the wife

as a commuter car since she drives 2,000

miles per month  back and forth to

work in our Yukon XL at 12 MPG. :{

I'd get a loaded white Jetta TDI 5spd and

put on a set of Wulfsburg wheels. Sharp

looking little scooter!

I'm upset that VW cannot import the TDI

Passat which is sold in Europe with 130

HP! Now that would be a car I could live

with. Even the Jetta TDI over there is

110 HP. There are a couple companies

that make boxes for the TDI, one being

vAD SmartBox (van Aaken Developments).

They have tested a VW TDI V6 with the

vA box and get 175HP @ 3400 RPM and

301 Ft Lbs at 2200! :p

Don't own one but I have one on loan from a freind that's in Afganistan right now. Nice car and can't beat the gas mileage! of course had to talk him to put in a fuel box in it before he left... ... . woke that puppy up! I can spin the tires up to 3 rd gear with out trying REAL hard:D

Good power, right for a commuter car. There are some issues with intake manifold plugging and a 70,000 mile timing belt that costs 700$. I turned down the EGR, and this weekend or next will disable the crancase ventilation. Oil mist plus soot= clogged intake- go figure. mileage is great. Only doing about 1200 miles per month right now( 40-50MPG). Got all the info from www.tdiclub.com Go surfing and you will like what you hear. Of course just like here problem resolutions come to the top. I have not had a clogged intake. I am just following some advice ( like a lemming ). Really love the car. GLS Jetta 5 speed with all the goodies except the cold weather package ( heated seats and heated windshield resevoir) Got it off the lot. Get one with the monsoon CD player you will like it. And tell me how the heated seats are if you get them.

Well to answer my own questions i stopped by a dealer today and all the sales people were busy, they only had golfs with the 5 speed. I asked to drive one, but got tired of waiting, it was real hot outside there so i went inside and seen one of the Passat with the W8 engine equipped $38k!!!!! Then we left!

I know they're giving pretty good discounts on the Jettas right now. you could probably pick up a TDI, GL for around $18000, or a GLS for around $19,500.
