Before buying a lift pump make sure you need one. You more likely have an air leak somewhere which can be fixed for very little or no expense. Remember, the lift pump can't pump air.

Not trying to hi-jack...

but, does anyone have a rubber dust cover for the priming button they can part with from a pump that was replaced - mine is cracked and apparently the cover is not available separately.

Thanks.

Joe G I did do the prefilter service and made sure the heater wasn't leaking. I don't think I'm drawing air.

I put a schrader fitting on the outlet side (it's my '98 acting up) and fuel pressure is 0 at idle and doesn't register on the gauge until about 1500. It maxes at around 8psi when revved up to the governor. The symptom was really flat power when trying to pass on the highway. I thought maybe it was the result of a bone stock 180hp truck in 100+ weather, but it's definitely not right.

I took it off last night, disassembled and cleaned it, but it looked OK. It did have some galling on the plunger. Used emery cloth to smooth out the roughness. I kinda tested the check valves and they seem to be fine, however they're the neoprene disk variety and it only takes something as small as a hair or fleck of junk to render them nearly useless. I blew them out to clear any debris. Put it back together & reinstalled, and fuel pressure is a bit better but far from ideal. Power is noticeably better. Kidfan is sending me his old pump :)

How did you check the heater? You can't see an air leak. The fitting on top of the heater is a POS too. It is a fiber washer kind of thing. Last year one of our members found that was his problem. It's easy to take the heater out and see if that affects your problem. Is the curved hose between the pre-filter and the LP ok? It can leak are too. Same kind of thing, you can't see an air leak.

Joe, the one on my '96 was leaking, the electrical connector was fuel-soaked. I could blow air through it with my mouth. It was dry on my '98 and I couldn't blow air through it.

The 90* hose is good, and I put real hose clamps on it.

Not sure what you mean by a fiber washer, don't remember ever seeing one of those.

I replaced the LP on my 94 with one like in the picture. . it came from cummins, it worked but had to loop a fuel line from the heater though, the 90 was too tight!

On mine there was no fuel leak at all from the heater element. The only way I detected that something was wrong with it was when I put the whole business in a bucket of water and put 10 PSI of compressed air in it. Then there were bubbles from the electrical connector. It was a steady stream of bubbles, but they were small and spaced quite a ways. I don't think I could have detected the leak just by blowing with my mouth without putting it in water.

The fiber washer is in the brass fitting on top of the assembly as shown in the above picture. The guy who had that problem replaced the fitting with a compression fitting instead of messing around trying to get a new washer. The fiber washer is probably to provide a little flex because of vibration.
